Today was our New Years Tankard.

At the desk my playing partners and myself were told "club handicap max 24" not the winter handicaps we were playing off currently. Just as we were leaving one of my playing partners asked is it a medal or stableford? Stableford came the reply.

I wont lie my current handicap is not true (everyone knows it and to be fair it hasnt been an issue as all club comps have been cancelled since october. See winter Handicap) and is based on the last time we played the summer course back in October despite several cards going in the club has refused to cut me.

So after blobbing the first I then racked up 42 points before blobbing the 16th and finished on 49 points. As you can imagine at this point I am 100% certain ive won it. Name up on the board, trophy at presentation night etc...

Untill we got to the changing room and were told it was a medal comp...... Now we have to see what everyone else has done and what they were told, however it looks like I will be disqualified and so will one of my playing partners who achieved 40 points and blobbed one hole.

Gutted

Did you get your entry fee back as it was not your fault?

No decision has been made yet, im just expecting the worst as we were the only 3 ball that picked up if we were out of an hole. Really doesnt help that all 3 of us are "newish" members with one only joining in october.

Bad luck on the competition front - understand how you could be gutted' Would seem that whoever was in charge of the communication for the comp should be gutted (verb) too!

Provided it was a qualifier (length change could make it NQ) you should get a cut though - as handicap is a stableford measurement. Not sure whether that's good news or not. Seems to me that winning comps off your higher 'cap is the way to convince those that refuse to cut you. As long as you make it known that you have tried to get cut, but committee refused, then it's the committee that should take any flak.

we have a board very near the first tee which will say what tees and what format. it would be up to us to check this. not rely on the wee girl in the shop being right.

Sounds like a comms cockup.

However, I'm still trying to work out how it is possible to score 49 points and have holes where you picked up

The wee Girl is our club president and the board hasnt been updated for weeks.

With no Pro since October and the chance of one actually taking the job on offer highly unlikely things like this are becoming more and more common. At the end of the day its my own fault, If I had put the dam ball in the hole there wouldnt have been a problem.

Lets hope they at least cut my handicap

Scoring 49pts off a dodgy handicap, I'd be embarrassed not gutted.

The Committee must establish the conditions under which a competition is to be played.

Decision 34-3/1/5 should be drawn to your committees attention straight away - although they should find it themselves (obviously)

The relevant section

"3. Guidance on Local Rules or Conditions of Competition
When a member of the Committee or a referee gives incorrect information on whether a Local Rule or condition of the competition is in effect, the player should be exempt from penalty for acting on that information. This exemption should be for the duration of the round unless corrected earlier, in which case, the exemption should cease at that point."

Which only really leaves any scope around the status of the individual who advised you it was stableford - in this case, from the information you have posted, it seems difficult to argue that he's not acting with at least the implied authority the authority of the committee.

Such issues happen (often), but the real issue is how smoothly they get resolved. That you even think that being 'new members' should impact on any decision is a cause for concern. Let's hope your committee can rise above such matters in their deliberations.

What do you suggest I do? Stop playing Golf until next summer? If the club refuses to cut my official handicap and forces me to play off it in a competition should I drive a few out of bounds? Duff a few chips? Or should I go out there and give it my best?

Why would I be embarrassed or did you not read the whole post?

I read your post in full.

I'm assuming your " winter handicap" is 3/4 of your full handicap?

I'm assuming that you mean that there have been no qualifiers since October when you stopped playing the "summer course". If there have been no qualifiers and consequently no opportunity to submit Supplementaries then a handicap cut would be highly unlikely. My suspicion is that the course as you are playing now is significantly different from the "summer course" and would therefore preclude comps from being qualifiers with no chance of handicap reductions.

So what can be done to get this Guy's handicap somewhere near where it should be?
OK the course might be shorter but then it might be playing a similar length because of the rain..they simply might not run qualifiers in Winter..
No qualifiers = no cut but come the first comp of the season he may well have improved even more and be winning comps with 50+ points.
Is there a way round this?

I can't see any way round. At the risk of sounding like a jobsworth, "rules is rules". Handicaps are based on performance in qualifying competitions on the measured course. Significant reductions in length of the course for winter play would make it very difficult to set a benchmark. It's not just the reduction in length that changes things but the length reduction can also remove, for example, the likelihood of finding fairway bunkers and other hazards which could be in range under normal conditions. I'm afraid the OP will probably have to bite the bullet and perform at the same level in qualifiers and Supplementaries when they are back on the agenda. Spring is just around the corner.

49 points with 2 blobs !!!!!

Your handicap secretary needs to get his house in order, you've admitted your handicap is way out and they've done nothing about it,so in effect you could play a winter open somewhere and clean up.
