Not sure if this has been said before, but this was released by the R&A yesterday.

Rules - 01 Oct, 2009
Many of golf’s leading players have already changed their clubs to ones which meet the new groove specifications in advance of the elite professional competition deadline of 1 January 2010. The club golfer, however, will remain unaffected by the new Rule until at least 2024, the earliest possible date that it will come into force in all levels of the game.

“We believe that this rule change is necessary to reinforce the importance of accuracy at the highest levels of the game,” explained The R&A’s Director of Rules and Equipment Standards, David Rickman. “However, beyond that the new Rules will be phased in very gradually.”

“The vast majority of the golfing public will enjoy many years’ use of their existing equipment within the Rules and this, of course, will also apply to any purchases they make from manufacturers’ existing model ranges.”

Though it will not be necessary for a club golfer to buy a new set of irons, it must be borne in mind that all clubs manufactured from 1 January 2010 must conform to the new specifications.

Personally I can't wait.
I'm getting sick to the back teeth with the amount of backspin I'm getting. Do you know how frustrating it is to land your ball 3 feet behind the pin and see it spin 6 feet back all the time?
I'm useless at 3 footers.
