At the beginning of the year I used to grip an rip my driver very tight and average about 250-260 with a fade and all was good, but then people where saying "don't grip it so tight" and I changed and the fade turned into a slice and I have been struggling ever since and even dumped the driver for my 4i... Today I gripped and ripped and got my best ever 9 with +1 and +10 for the day!!

I shall only ever listen to peoples advice thats been tested and I am happy with. Roll on the next medal.

Has anyone done this and had a negative affect on your game?

There is often a lot of well meaning but technically incorrect advise offered (usually with the best intent) and I've had it happen when I've been playing poorly in competitions and my parthers (guys I've never played) have said something in passing. I ALWAYS ignore it as a) the middle of a competition is not the place for swing changes no matter how badly you are hacking and b) I would only ever take the advise of a PGA pro.

I like the person who said..."grip it as hard as the intent of the shot you are going to play". If you are going to fire a shot in hard and spinning then grip it harder than if you're hitting a smooth high floaty shot that lands softly by the pin. That whole tube of toothpaste thing is rubbish as far as I'm concerned. Just my 2 cents of course.

I think you will find that there is nothing wrong with the advice, just the execution or rather where the execution took place. You should never try to change anything as fundemental as the grip during a round of golf this should always be done on the practice ground. You should try never have any technique swing thoughts while trying to score they will only get in the way.

As Jack always says "you gotta dance with the lady you brought"
