Is It worth a trip?
A few of us are thinking of a golf break in April and we usually sort the accomodation and courses out ourselves, but this time we're maybe thinking of a resort type place instead of the usual trip to Scotland.
Ive always avoided this type of place for a break except for Trevose where we stayed a few years ago, it was ok but I didn't rate it as highly as our Scottish trips.

I've been looking into Forest Pines and it looks Ok and the price is pretty good too.

For those that have been could you recommend it and does the course hold up well, I can imagine it gets quite a lot of traffic. Also it it mainly Golfers that stay in the hotel?

You know what it's like when you plan these trips, You want to get it right, Play decent course/courses, and come away feeling it was money well spent.

We're not sure whether to take a chance on it or play it safe with one of our usual Scottish Destinations.

I only live half hour away and play there 4-5 times a year. Would I recommend it - hell yes!

It does get a lot of traffic, but with it having 3 loops of 9 it isn't as bd as you think, and I've played at all times of the year and it's always in good condition. The greens are lovely.

To give an idea on quality, it's trying to hold the Solheim cup in a few years, so it's not shabby.

Best advice I'd give is unless you drive straight, leave it at home. Off the tee the trees seem to bend over the fairways, and if you go wide you'll be taking medicine!!!!

Hotel is nice, generally full of golfers, people attending conferences or ladies at the spa..... ;)

Get it booked!

I would advise a round at some other local courses too if you have the time, Gainsborough, Market Rasen and Grimsby Golf Club are the 3 next best in the area.

Yeah, Grimsby is an interesting track. If you come north of the River Humber try Brough, Hessle or Beverley.

Only every played rugby on the north bank, never golf! I only played two summers of golf as a kid and those were both at Grimsby. I love ALL the par 3s there, not played on better than any of those 4 yet!

be prepeared to get raped on the prices of beer and food ,£2.95 a pot tea i bought last month, beer around £4 a pint, descent track but in my opinion market rasen is better, off yellows the course aint over challanging you can get up most par 4s with a drive and a small iron

science , if you only ever played rugby on north bank, it carnt be what we call proper rugby can it???

Yes definitely, its a cracking setup and can't recommend it enough.

The forest and pines are the better 18 of the 27.

I'm playing there tomorrow so i will report back on my return. If today's round is anything to go by, I will be taking my medicine out of them trees.

Thanks for the replys fellas.
On golfbreaks they're offering 2 nights dinner bed n breakfast and 3 rounds for £215.
I suppose it's not a bad price if the course is up to it.

£4 a pint will be a heartbreaker though.

Scunny is just down the road, I highly recommend going out there for a drink ;)

I've never been, but I reckon Sunny Scunny could fit the bill.

I'd better get those late Teetimes booked!

OMG NOOOOOOOOOO!!!! To a night out in Scunny that is!

You can walk a mile or so down the road to Broughton for a few beers though.

That aside the course is fantastic, always in superb condition and Beeches (the third o the 9's) is equally as good as Forest and Pines IMO. It gets a fair bit of traffic, but no more and probably less than your average course - we play it 3 or 4 times a year when we can get a twilight or other offer, aways thouroughly enjoyed it, always been in the trees at some point and always left with a smile.

Grimsby is a lovely course, about 35 mins drive, Elsham is closer and also very good. Ashby Decoy in Scunthorpe is worth a visit and Normanby Hall is close too, a Muni course so the fairways get a bit of hammer, but a testing course, not many play to handicap first time round and a bargain at around £14.

My only real criticism would be the tricked up greens which are in fine condition but far too fast for the (considerable......ie elephant buried in every green) slopes in summer. The setup is good, the hotel good (but as mentioned on the expensive side), the layout is what it says on the tin......trees everywhere, so you have to be straight.
Personally I'd go for Oulton Hall if you can get it for similar price. Better course, better hotel and only 10 mins out of Leeds centre.

Just back this evening from a couple of days at FP.
Played the Forest & Pines combo both days, Absolutley superb!
Can't speak highly enough about the place, the course was presented in tip-top condition. No signs of "Lack of growth" that folks from other inland courses are complaining about, the greens were as good as I've seen on my travels.
The Staff couldn't be more helpfull, yeah the bar prices were on the steep side but par for the course at these type of Places. Not so steep in the shop though a dozen of the new B330s (2012) for £25!

Interestingly the shop doesn't stock Titleist gear, couple of guys were miffed they couldn't buy pro v's. Presuming the group doesn't do business with Acushnet for some reason.

I would recommend it highly - I went with a group of lads about 6 years ago and the weather was awful almost every other course in the area was shut but Forest Pines was in great nick and whilst not as much fun as two separate 18 holers your will find that the 3 nines are all good quality (whereas 36 hole resorts tend to have one good and one poor 18). We played Woodhall Spa on the way up to Forest Pines which made a good trip awesome - bit of a drive but if you played Woodhall and then stayed and played at Forest Pines you'd be in wonderland.
