Welcome to the unwashed and unloved camp :D - its more fun

My mate mentioned the effects the players have in peoples support

I cant stand players like Terry and Cole and Rooney etc - spend all season long wishing them to lose when they are on the oppositin ( as would you with Gerrard etc ) and then being told that when they put on a different shirt im suddenly expected to support them !! No way.

I dont support the other teams that play against England , i dont want them to lose - i would like to see my clubs' players do well on the big stage.

Not to argue with your right to choose to support england or not, but how did you get around this feeling when you did follow England? Surely Liverpool rivals in the team then?

Some of the crap spouted by people who claim to be football fans astounds me. I watched all but 3 of the PL teams this season and never wanted to see them touch the ball against my lot never mind score or win. I shouted at players whom I'll gladly cheer for when they pull on an England shirt - wye? Because I can look beyond short term England managers, players like the class of '92, players who I personally don't think are good enough to be picked but for some reason the manager does. I understand that I don't like John Terry when he plays for Chelsea against us (except this season) but love his commitment when he has 3 lions on his shirt but you know what it really is - I don't really hate opposition players, in fact, that's who I bought the season ticket to see, I think the notion of hating people who you don't know or have never met is childish, but , when they play for my country that is a different matter, it's my country and I love my country more than I love my team even though I support the team where I was born and bred and not, like many, the team that just happened to win the league when the were 10 years old and first found football!

Fully fledged supporter of all things england here.
But then again, i'm southern and support a small team so i'm bound to be i suppose!

Chelski?

I think the small club side of it comes about because of the baggage that the club v country rows bring about with the bigger clubs.

Sorry I was relaying my mates point

And back in the 80's etc there was never really a massive dislike for opposition players like you have now - maybe because they weren't in the limelight so much maybe

My list of players i dislike does seem to of ALL been mentioned in your post.

To be fair, i think the small club argument is tosh. The topic has been raised and talked to death, but the only big clubs support i know that have a real apathy for england are liverpool. Whilst i fully support their choice to be scouse and not english after past events. I don't know why they try and use other reasons.

But it's just a pseudo dislike, if next season they transfer to your lot you then embrace them and love them!

But surely back then, rivalries were more fierce with hooliganism? I don't like JT or Cashley and they're not at rival teams. I despise any that play for portsmouth though.

How Law is still a legend at UTD having sent them down is beyond me. If Le Tissier played in a friendly for the Skates he'd be disowned!

Ah but we were relagated by birmingham anyway! The back heel was in fact immaterial. Get your point though and attitudes have dramatically changed these days.

First of all - hate is such a strong word and not sure it's been used anywhere

Whether people's chose to support the England football team or not has zero bearing on their love for their country

Support is about choice - people can chose to support who they like and for any reason they like - but to be critisized for making a choice IMO is wrong - I don't have a go at people for deciding to support England - so why should me or any others be on the end of critiscim for our choices ! I served my country so that we can all have a choice - support for a sports team is not compulsory it's a choice

I chose to support Liverpool because that's who I watched as a grew as a kid - that's where I got my education in football as a kid - that is my football team not England football team.

Let people chose who they support or don't support

I never partook in any hooliganism and that was aimed at rival fans not players.

Were you? Before my time so only ever heard it told with Law being the villain. Couldn't see him getting of the pitch these days!

I'm not suggesting you did, and i know it was aimed at fans. But it was still worse with rival clubs was it not?

If I, honest I don't know our rivalries where Everton but we didn't beat the hell out of each other nor with the Mancs

It may well have gone on away from the grounds and It was happening in London

Wise words from the senior forum member

If Ashley cole gets a free to Liverpool this summer, phil may be in a state of confusion.:D

I don't support a club team, I'll watch match of the day if I can stay awake.

but I will support England. The country feels a better place when we have a good tournament, it's a real unifying force.

I guess if you were born within sight of Paddy's wigwam, you support Ireland...;):D

English footie fan and support England. Used to watch them regularly but, having spent all my holiday money on a trip to the best forgotten Euros in 1988, I've not done so since! Doesn't stop me dreaming and hoping although these days with a much more realistic head over heart attitude. Prefer to watch England rugby these days.
