Football transfer windows

But it was fine when you signed him on improved terms from Celtic?

No one likes it when it's their own club having to sell when they can't match the salary or the potential trophy count, but that's just the way of the world.

Saints didn't sign VvD 1 year into a long term contract.

No It was 2...

Yep, 2 years into a 4 year contract or to put it another way, half way through. He signed a 5 year deal with Saints then a year later he signed an improved 6 year deal. 6 months after that he gets injured, Saints continue to pay him full whack then he rewards them by handing in a transfer request.

Oh and you have to laugh at the irony. Liverpool pursue him illegally but they are adamant they won't let Coutinho go

OK i'll bite....

Players are insured, so any wages paid during his time injured would most likely been covered. Did he ask for a new contract after 6 months? or was he offered improved terms and an extra year to increase his market value? i would imagine it was the latter.

Tapping up goes on, whether anyone likes it or not, Liverpool made the mistake of going public with the conversions that had been ongoing and Southampton rightly got pi55ed off. As a club they have made a habit of selling their best players whether that is lallana, clyne, lovren et al to Liverpool or Walcott and Chamberlain etc to Arsenal before.

Not sure where the irony is with Coutihno, Saints are also amendment that VVD won't be sold and if reports are to believed are willing to let him sit in the stands on £50k a week, doesn't sound like great business to me. Liverpool are just as adamant the Courtinho won't be sold. I'm sure he's also been 'tapped up' by Barca.

I would keep both windows but the summer one ends the moment each league kicks off.

What I would ban is Sky's coverage of transfer deadline day and put an end to Jim White's annoying and tiresome ramblings on speculative transfers, 99% of which turn out to be utter horse poo!! And tell him to stop faking the excitement of transfers between the likes of Grimsby and Fleetwood!!

If players had to stay for the duration of their contract there would be no transfer fees, which would be a complete disaster for lower league clubs that rely on that revenue stream for survival.

I think scrapping the window altogether would be the best option. In part, it's having to get things done in such a short period of time that puts pressure on and leads to crazy transfer fees for relatively average players (Andre Gray £19m?).

I would have one transfer window that opens the last day of the season and closes the first day of the new season. This would a,so include managers, no chopping and changing mid season. If a club has a player injured long term at the start of the season, tough, thats what reserve/youth teams are for. I would also introduce a rule that PL teams have to field a certain number of English academy trained players. Its the only way the national team will ever get back to challenging for trophies.
