Evening all,
Not quite as dramatic as the header makes it sound, but today was my first round back as a member at Crowborough in East Sussex having just rejoined on their new flexible membership scheme.
It was an interesting experience that got me thinking a little. I've been playing a reasonable amount in the last few weeks, hitting the ball pretty well, but putting and chipping averagely at best and sometimes poorly, and in terms of scores, when I've been vaguely keeping a card, low 80s at best, sometimes erring a little higher when things have gone a bit awry.
Anyway, having played for the team when I was last there two and half years ago, I wanted to give at least the vaguest impression I could still play, but those who have played Crowborough will know that with a 2-3 club blustery wind and fairways like concrete, it's not the easiest place to get it round to handicap, so wasn't really sure what to expect and set myself a hopeful target of perhaps breaking 80. Oh, and after my terrible putting of late, I chucked my old Heavy Putter back in on a whim (greens were very good by the way), and off we went.
To cut a potentially long and tedious story short, for whatever reason, I hit it great all the way round without ever hitting it really close, notched up 13 pars, 4 bogeys and a double to sign for a 77 which really could probably only have been better, putting well all round from long range and holing out well from 4-10ft, missing only one.
So my two questions are:-
1) Should I just accept that the Heavy Putter is the best option for me now as it stops my wrists muscling in on the stroke uninvited! (don't tell my office colleagues as they'll think I'm admitting to being a raving twitcher from short range!).
2) Do you think that my score might have been a result of extra focus and concentration from a real desire to acquit myself well first time back?

I know most of you will be watching Man Utd right now, but as a City fan, I've got better things to do with my time...

Did it feel good using it, try it again and see if it was something to do with concentrating more.

Oh and well played sir!

You always seem(ed) good from long distance to leave short/easy ones, so I guess you've got to go with whatever is best from 5-15 foot, which sounded solid enough to me.
No good hitting greens and waiving a stick you don't have confidence in from medium range.

admit to being a twitcher, keep the heavy putter in the bag....if it works. Maybe consider a broom handle. :D

as an aside, it's good to hear Crowborough is in good nick. I'm playing there in a society in July & hope to sneak a practice round before

Concentation, that was the difference. Knowing that you were playing for a score was the key.

1) Chuck out the 3W and the 5W, add a 4W and a lightweight putter then you've got the best of both worlds.

2) The good round was down to concentration and effort and low expectation - but soon you will trust your subconcious and then.. BAMM !! 1 golf game gone in a puff of smoke.

I thought you realised that the game of golf is nothing other than a modern interpretation of the allegory of the cave. It is just an interpretation of the truth of the game, rather than the actuality of the truth.

IE just when you think you've got some kind of idea what you are doing, THAT is the beginning of the end.

You've done the right thing in rejoining CB Jezz. Great course and good membership deal.

I played there with our Vets the week before last and had one of my best rounds for a while. Managed to hit and hold 10 fairways - a record for me.

Easy course :D :D

We were stuffed btw (as usual there).

In answer to your question, stick with what is working at the moment. I got the feeling that due to the lack of rain your greenkeeper was protecting the greens a bit by not cutting them too low. They were certainly a little slower than I remembered so a heavier putter may be required anyway.

Keep up the good shooting.
