Evening all,
Not quite as dramatic as the header makes it sound, but today was my first round back as a member at Crowborough in East Sussex having just rejoined on their new flexible membership scheme.
It was an interesting experience that got me thinking a little. I've been playing a reasonable amount in the last few weeks, hitting the ball pretty well, but putting and chipping averagely at best and sometimes poorly, and in terms of scores, when I've been vaguely keeping a card, low 80s at best, sometimes erring a little higher when things have gone a bit awry.
Anyway, having played for the team when I was last there two and half years ago, I wanted to give at least the vaguest impression I could still play, but those who have played Crowborough will know that with a 2-3 club blustery wind and fairways like concrete, it's not the easiest place to get it round to handicap, so wasn't really sure what to expect and set myself a hopeful target of perhaps breaking 80. Oh, and after my terrible putting of late, I chucked my old Heavy Putter back in on a whim (greens were very good by the way), and off we went.
To cut a potentially long and tedious story short, for whatever reason, I hit it great all the way round without ever hitting it really close, notched up 13 pars, 4 bogeys and a double to sign for a 77 which really could probably only have been better, putting well all round from long range and holing out well from 4-10ft, missing only one.
So my two questions are:-
1) Should I just accept that the Heavy Putter is the best option for me now as it stops my wrists muscling in on the stroke uninvited! (don't tell my office colleagues as they'll think I'm admitting to being a raving twitcher from short range!).
2) Do you think that my score might have been a result of extra focus and concentration from a real desire to acquit myself well first time back?
I know most of you will be watching Man Utd right now, but as a City fan, I've got better things to do with my time...
