First Handicap

Many thanks for that it was as I suspected. Have I read that right that now I have put in 3 cards I could essentially be given any handicap they deem fit?

They must follow a procedure.
The score for each hole is determined after reducing any large score to nett double bogey and the total score for the card calculated.
The lowest score of all the cards, minus the Standard Scratch Score, is the handicap you will be allocated, unless the committee has a strong reason to make an adjustment. Social golf would not be such a reason.

Incidentally, clubs may specify that they require more than 3 cards (but not less) if they wish.

Just to clarify, high scores on any hole are reduced to gross double bogey.

Nett is the figure "remaining after all deductions" (definition). A reduction has been made so that figure is now nett (or net).

Gross "
before deductions have been made".

I only mentioned it as players would normally associate a net(t) score as a score with the appropriate handicap allowance subtracted and in handicap allocation there is no handicap allowance involved. Perhaps CONGU's use of the phrase "reduced to 2 over Par" (3 for Ladies) would be better.

Just been given my first official handicap of 14 after submitting 3 cards of 88,88 and 84 (on par 72 course). Gives me a target to improve against now although I think 84 is the best round of my life. So as Yazz would say, "The Only Way is Up"!!

Well played that's a very decent number to start off from.

In fact your score is related to the SSS not par. They may well be different. the 14 suggests the SSS is probably 70 unless you had some double bogey adjustments in your 84.

A course of 18 short par 4s (yellow say) will have a par of 72
A course of 18 long par 4s (white say) will have a par of 72.

The SSS tells the relative difficulty and the score you need to achieve to play to scratch.
