First Handicap

Go back to the handicap secretary and ask them to look at it again and give you an explanation. If they say it's right then you've done all you can and go out and play off the higher mark and enjoy the thrill of getting down. You might even pick up a pot or two on the way

Thanks everyone for your responses

I think I'm going to do what Homer has advised ^. The handicap sec is off this week, back on Sunday so I'll ask her to explain then and ask if it was taken from the best card, and if so, why wasn't it 20. I'll keep you all updated with the outcome.

Cheers

Results are in. As you can see from the sig, I've been given a handicap of 26.4. When I asked (politely) why this was given when my calculations make it 20, I was told that all 3 cards were entered into the computer, and that was the result that came out. So there we go, I'll take my extra shots and enjoy them, and work towards getting it cut

Oh dear, I wonder who set that up and got it badly wrong. As far as I remember, the CONGU license for handicap software doesn't allow the processing of scorecards for initial allocation so someone has set up a system to do it - wrongly.

Sorry for you buddy, I would be frustrated but sounds like your ready to make the best of it!

Same thing happened to me when I did my 1st 3 cards. I was given 26 when my best was an 89 with a blob on 1 hole against a SSS of 70.

The handicap secretary changed my initial handicap to 18 and I'm now steadily working my way back up :(

Contact the Handicap Secretary, point out the scores and ask why the high allocation.

It would be interesting to see what he/she gives for a reason.

Were those scores off the Whites?

Probably same software that spat out 24.4 for me rather than 24. One stroke under will bring that down to 24 even and I cant be bothered mentioning it.

They seem to make it up at every course :D
I handed in cards of 90, 91 and 100 (par is 71), I ended up with a handicap of 20 when people I knew were expecting me to get more mid 20's.
Not really fussed tbh, if anything it makes me try harder as I know I have to shoot very well to play to it.
Then again, the way I swung the club at the weekend I felt more a 40 handicapper
