I always remember it as being good. So long between S1 and S2 I have forgotten most it.

I would guess many of the characters are not in the new series. ie the baddies.

I believe that is correct, based on the snippets I've heard.

Apparently the first was based on a John le Carre book, the second is purely a TV piece using the same, good guy, characters.
