Very much depends on how much money and free time you have. Personally I am a member at one club. This year I have played in a few Opens at other courses, check out Golf Empire, played away at friends clubs as a guest, had a short UK away trip.
Playing different courses keeps things fresh for me, it's a lot of fun.

Join as many courses as you want or can justify the time and money for.

I would definitely join a club on a distance membership, but locally i try to play home or a variety so wouldnt want two choices.
if you are in Glasgow i would have a look at joining a links course for the winter, then at least you could get a game when it gets really wet at your home club

I am a member at just one club.
We have reciprocal arrangements with about 10 other clubs and play home and away matches with 14 other clubs.
A cheap way to play other club is to play in their Opens
or
get a County Card but you are restricted to weekday golf.

Coastal sand bases courses, built on links land between the sea and farmland usually. the likes of the Troon clubs, Prestwick, Dundonald and both Gails clubs. Thers quite a few.

I have never been a member of a club. I just play different courses. Some 9, some 18 hole. I get bored playing the same course.

It depends on the course. When I got back into golf I mainly played on 2 courses that after a couple of months I got bored with both. I then joined a club that I used to play once a year when I was in a society 20 years previous. I am still a member of that course 7 years later and have never got bored with it. I play maybe 5-6 times on other courses a year but this year so far over 60 times on my home course as it is always a challenge.

I've played a lot of courses and wouldn't want to play any of them more than a few times a year. But I also have no interest whatsoever in joining a club.
why is that?

Besides not wanting to play the same course all the time, I don't need a handicap, I don't want to play comps, I don't want to play or socialise with many of the people who are the type that join golf clubs. I have no reason to join a club.

What kind of people? plenty of sub groups. Slow old farts, slow miserable old farts, fast as lighting old boys from down the pit, knackered old pit lads, Slow aspiring pro, people that don’t know when to pick up, people that spend too long looking for balls, committee members, players that are unwelcoming to new players in their group, people who play too seriously?
They’re are cool, laid back people at golf clubs to play with just ask the pro at the club who he recommends to play with that would match your personality. You’ll get the gist of who to avoid!

During the last 10 years or so I have played at the Club I joined in 2012, as well as a 2nd course, a links some 70 minutes away. I have also played all over the UK & Ireland at organised meets with the guys from this Forum as well as in Open Comps at other Clubs & with the local Leeds Golf Union who organize regular Comps at give-away prices.
Whilst you're right that golfers are largely of a certain type I'm sure you'd be able to get on ok & enjoy a shared activity, 'cos you wouldn't believe some of the weirdos the members on here manage to tolerate. Hahaha.
Playing at one Club does not need to be boring as once you have a H/cap the course is a challenge each time you go out as you always face different conditions of wind, length of semi, speed of greens as well as pins in different places. It may not sound much but once you get into it at a Club the challenge is there. AND, that's before you play different formats & team golf.
