It depends what the club the OP has in terms of facilities. If it doesn't have too many practice facilities then it makes sense to look for other options. If it has a decent practice ground and an area to work on chipping and putting then I wouldn't bother too much. I've the option of joining a club near me with a range and short game but it doesn't have lights and so no use to me in the winter so it isn't a viable option with winter coming. Might be worth looking at next year

Why is any of that a strange attitude? Basically I don't like most people and there's likely to be more of the type of person I don't like who are members of golf clubs. I can tolerate most people for a short period, but that doesn't mean I'd want to play golf of socialise with them.

Then I'd question why you're socialising (albeit digitally) with those types of people online?! A hugely bizarre statement to begin with - all types of people from all walks of life join golf clubs. I'd imagine the vast majority of folk here are members at a club.

I'm not socialising with anyone on here. The OP asked a question and I told him what I do and why. I was asked why I didn't want to join a club and I replied. Not everyone is a member of a club and some, like me, have no interest in joining one. When I play golf, my interaction with any members tend to be very minimal. A reasonable proportion of my interactions with members at clubs have been unpleasant.

At least it's unlikely that someone will shout at me to tuck my shirt in halfway across the car park on an internet forum though and I can ignore anyone who is concerned about the colour of socks. Also I can completely avoid anyone's offensive opinions, boring conversation and unfunny banter far more easily. I am interested in the information about golf that this forum provides and am happy to pass some of my experience onto others. I did ask the moderators to delete my account a while ago as I know not everyone shares my point of view, but they didn't. So I'm having to waste my time defending myself.

No, as I never wear shorts. Some golf clubs don't like happy socks though.
you should be fine in Scotland wearing what ever you like, there might be a handful of courses that might have dress restrictions, most of those would be worth towing there line as they are likley to be top courses or open venues, only place i wasn;t allwed shorts was Royal Aberdeen, but thats changed now.
Some of the most memorable/traumatic threads on here have been about sock rules ?. I kid you not.
Irrelevant with long trousers, be pre warned with shorts. Check out dress codes at clubs you visit, and yes, many do enforce them.

Before you play a new course check what dress code they have, on the visitors section of the website.
For example, Ganton say you must wear knee length socks with shorts; as I had checked, I knew not to wear shorts the day I played their.

You can wear the most stupid loud colour clothing but beware don’t wear the wrong coloured socks?
Some don't like black socks with shorts, some don't like trainer style socks. You can probably wear lime green and that would be fine ?.
These places are relatively rare. Just check out the code before you go.
To me it's crackers, others will tell you it is the right of members of those clubs to choose. Hey ho.

Regarding the OP’s original question, I am a member at one club, but have a number of friends who are members at other local clubs, so I also play with them at their clubs at a reduced rate as a member’s guest ... and they similarly play at mine. I also play various other courses as one offs when the opportunity arises. I would like to join a second club and so I’m trying to find one that offers “second memberships”; i.e. at a reduced cost for limited benefits.

Someone asked my why I didn't want to be a member of a club and I answered. People shouldn't ask questions they might not like the answer to.
