Sorry I should clarify, this were shown with chairman etc. not 30 players in a dressing room like the old days. So unless the chairman are putting their boots on then my point stands. I am nt saying the cup isn't important to players or fans. But the cup is part of a business, and re businessmen don't share te passion for it.

Apologies mate i didnt see it & i thought you meant the players , its always going to be about cash for the Chairmen etc unfortunatley thats the reality to the dream

I'm a fan of a PL (just) team and I'd love us to have a cup run and get to Wembley if only to exorcise the ghost of 75 where I cried all the way home. I think more most football fans, perhaps with the exception of the top 5-6 PL sides, it still has a cachet and most would love to see their own side do well. I think the fact that it's the first weekend of the new year is a big factor in why attendances are down but if not then when do you play it?

I watched the London derby on the box yesterday and the Man U v Swansea game earlier and none of those sides looked like they weren't bothered. I'm sure the competition with thrive again

I am a season ticket holder at Kidderminster Harriers and yesterdays game against Peterborough was certainly in a competition we care about. The atmosphere was superb. After all the rain of the last few weeks, supporters turned up at 8am to help ensure the game was played.

We won't win the competition but it gives the players the chance to test themselves against higher league opposition. Peterborough seemed to care too.

You think Moyes is happy to be out? Or do you just think that his gamble didn't pay off? That team should still have beaten Swansea at OT. Sorry Dodger I too disagree.

The FA Cup is still held in high esteem by all footy fans, as I believe it is by the Clubs.

Forget about poor attendances for a minute, in most cases these are representative of current league form and/or feeling fans have toward their club as pricing is very attractive now in cup comps.

What does take the gloss of it for me is the timing of the first (third) round. It comes straight after the festive season coined with ALL clubs having played three games in six days. People often talk about it being too expensive etc and now the question has been raised about whether the clubs themselves give a hoot.

The only reason that some (2%) don't "give a toss about it" is because they have what they regard as no squad or deem the league to be of more importance. This season the 2.2% I can think of are Villa and West Ham. Everybody else wants to win and the fans will be out in force come the 4th and 5th round.

And here is the reason why nearly all Clubs (prestige aside) want to progress in the cups - TV and prize money in later rounds far outweighs a split of 45/45/10 for the gate receipts, unless of course you get drawn against united, arsenal, spurs or Chelsea.

Prize money, for reference.

Rounds Points Prize money

Final runners-up (1) £900,000
Final winners (1) £1,800,000

sorry but those financial figures show exactly why the little clubs want to play a big club. The make close to £1m for a tie against UTD at Old Trafford, not this year though.

A small team has a better chance 64/6 (grounds with large numbers) come the third round of getting a big club than they do of reaching the finals. I believe millwall were the last team outside prem to get to final and they were championship level.
As for the poor timing of the cup, it has always been this time of year, so we can't say it's a lively traditional cup that we all love, but actually we want to change it.

And that just proves that the comp is alive and well and still special

Financial gain is great for the small clubs but it's not all about that - these so called small clubs want to be a hero in a giant killing act - they want to be remembered as Hereford or a Woking or a Sutton. The players want to be the next Ronnie Radford , the window cleaner on a Friday wants to mark Suarez on a Saturday or try and take on Mata on a Sunday.

Money does play a big deal for small clubs but it's not fully corrupted just yet

Support Chesterfield FC my local team and go to the home games when off from college, do not support any of the top teams. Do not have much chance to watch the FA cup as we are normally out in the 1st round:) and TBH honest this season I was glad when we went out to Southend as our squad is ravaged by injuries and suspensions and we could do without the extra games and focus on automatic promotion.

£18 - £21 a ticket, I vaguely remember those days. Two of us in the household and we both go, season tickets put a dent to the tune of £1760 into the wallet, that is for home league games, no FA Cup, league Cup or European games in that. European games come in at £35 or £55 for group stages or last 16, League Cup is I think £25, and FA Cup £30, so £70, £110, £50 or £60 for us before you add fares, food & drink. On that basis, I'm not going to be too harsh on anyone who gives a 3rd round tie a swerve just after Christmas.

It is expensive yes no one can deny that. Still does not have the allure of the early nineties and before. Teams playing weak line ups is evidence of this

Im sure to the players the glory is top priority. But to the clubs it's money money money. And its all well and good saying the game is about the hundreds of clubs and not just the big guns. But take out the top 5 clubs and where would that leave the cup. Finance would drop 50% at least. I live the old romance of the cup and still watch reruns on espn classics. But it's not like it used to be. The FA cup is still alive and kicking. But the FA of the crazy gang is dead and buried.

Yeah, I did mention the big 4 were pricing was concerned but still disagree with what you say to a degree. The suits might want to hit and run (ie away game/ticket revenue) but the players and management (and most fans) will always want the home tie, the suits would get the TV money and additional advertising and they'd all hope that they can force a replay to live out their dream.

I know it's always been the first week of Jan, merely pointing out to those that are talking about poor crowds, that perhaps the festive fixture list, is the reason why and not necessarily the cups 'magic' being lost.

The FA Cup might well only matter to 10 or so people in a Club for pounds, but for the fans and players alike, it's still the football that's the priority.

The FA Cup isn't what it was but I expect my team to try and win it to put silverware on the table which in turn only breeds confidence and gives the players the taste of success.

Take out the top 5 and it would still be the FA Cup with hundreds of other clubs involved - maybe it would be better without them

It was still a special cup run for us a couple seasons ago.

How can the FA of the crazy gang be dead when the holders are currently Wigan ?

Take out the top 5 and the FA cup loses a large portion of money and the opportunity for the acclaimed giant killing. Losing it's essence as such. There's a cup for lower teams which SAINTS won and yeah the final was great, but earlier ties had FREE tickets. Hardly what I'd want the FA cup to become.
Wigan were a premierleague team, Wimbledon weren't for a start. The FA cup for me is split in two. Lower league clubs all want to play in it for financial and glory reason split fairly evenly in desire. Them there are prem teams who put out fringe players until the later stages until glory is in sniffing distance.

Wimbledon were a top league side when they won the FA Cup - they also continued to be a top league club being regularly in the top ten - Wigan were relegated.

I should have said premiership business, not club. Fair play to wigan for winning it and all that. But until they got to the semis they couldn't give a hoot. Attendances will show that. And their tickets are dirt cheap so please none of this financial times stuff.

As a fan i would love my club to win all competitions it enters. But as i realise they are a business i know that the prem is the holy grail. As a POOL fan. Tell me this, if you could have one this year. Would it be top 4 or FA cup win???

Trophy every day of the week

And you ask Wigan Fans if they only gave a hoot until the semi ? When did I mention anything about financial times ?

Why were Wimbledon different to a Wigan then ? Both small clubs beating the big boys to win a massive trophy for them - that's the magic of the FA Cup

The difference for me is that wimbledon were run as a club for the fans. And not as a business. Look at wigans attedances. Its a rugby town. Its all well and good filling wembley for one day, and im sure it was a great day but show that support to your club the whole time and maybe they'd have inspired their team to stay up. As for the financial thing, that wasn't pointed at you. Its just a point often made by people to cover low attendances.

As for you winning the cup, all the best. And i'm sure many people may say the same as its a good soundbite. But if you were to go out, i'm sure "good we can concentrate on the league" and "europa league is a distraction anyway" will be used rather frequently.

None of what you mention about Wigan is relevant in regards the FA Cup being dead ?

Who is it you support ?

And if we were to get knocked out I would be gutted. Please don't presume too much

YOU may be gutted, but i know quite a few pool fans and i know none that dont crave the league and champs league more than anything else. Including the FA CUP. Of course what i say about wigan is relevant. They are current holders and yet their support for it as far as supporters attending has been mimal. How can that show that its alive and well....

I support Southampton as it goes. And was there watching us get run around by a championship striker before coming back to Kent for work last night.

Really? They thrashed Everton at Goodison in the quarters 3-0 and had the largest following their that day than they had taken to ANY premier league game that season. Wigan have poor attendances, we all know this, doesn't mean it meant less desire from those that attend.

And without going too much into the reasons why (i have two) I would love my Clubs to win a trophy above anything else. Promotion, champs league or whatever can wait until the year after. They have both had their chances to win and wimped out massively when it mattered.
