Are there strict rules on how you get an ESR??

Im Cat3 and played 5 tournaments this year and got 2x0.9 reduction and 1x1.5 reduction and other 2 within the buffer.

Noticed one of the other guys (Cat2) got an ESR this week and his record in the 5 comps is 3x+0.1 a -0.8 and a -1.0 reduction.

Guessing its either completely at handicap secretarys discretion or as a result os shooting 4 better than CSS more than once??

It's based on the frequency of Nett differentials averaging -4 or better. If you average between -4 and -5 over 2 rounds in a sequence of 4 qualifiers, 1 shot ESR reduction is recommended. Averaging better than -5 in a similar period leads to 2 or even 3 shot reductions and they all reduce if they cover longer sequences than 4 qualifiers.

Ah right. cheers, ive had a -5 and 2 -3s hence no additional reduction. Ill try and bring the A game this weekend. Or at least the no dings game!!!

I would have expected 2 @ -3 and 1 @ -5 in a sequence of 5 qualifiers would have triggered ESR. Your handicapping software should have flagged it up but your handicap committee does not have to implement it - it's a recommendation, but Golf England made it quite clear that any recommended reductions should be applied if there is no good reason not to implement.

Well you would think a 2 @ -3 and a -5 was better than a -4 and a -5!! The fella that got the redution done his b2b. I always had a "normal" round in between mine.

No - got my knickers a bit twisted. Your 2 @ -3 don't come into it, it's the average of 2 @ -4 or better that triggers it. That said, your sequence of 5 qualifiers (2 buffers, 2 @-3 and 1 @ -5 would certainly have made the ears of our handicap committee prick up.

And they should do nothing about it!

Let the system do its work. As long as comps are sufficiently frequent, then (Juniors and anomolies such as initial allocations apart) normal adjustments and ESRs will sort things out well - and actually provide incentive for the lazy static guys to improve too!

I think Rosecott's point is that the system would have flagged a cat 3 player producing exactly those rounds for a reduction in an annual review; but I expect we all (3) agree that now the ESR is here there's one less intervention required for the improver competing on the basis of Q scores alone, outside the AR.

I disagree.

General Play reductions in the period between Annual Reviews are based on the same principles used at Annual Review. Quote:

" Handicap Committees should examine the frequency of qualifying scores returned recently by the player to and below his playing handicap." 5 consecutive qualifiers comprising 2 buffers and 3 well below CSS would seem to fit that bill.

Right, thinking i might be in line for a ESR after yesterdays midweek comp. Scored 41 points (24 on the front) and assuming a CSS of 35 (hasnt been 36 yet this year) buy last lot of scores have been

-6
-3
(+0.1) - thought id buffered but obv not
-5
buffer
-3

handicap started at 19.0 and was down to 15.8 before last nights 41 pointer.
Am i likely to get an extra shot off??
