Actually Murph I think you've explained it. Smiffy said the ball was sitting down in a divot. To get a good strike you should move the ball back in your stance so you hit down on it so what if he did hit down on it and elofted the club as you've said. Hey presto an 8 iron.

Got to be honest, the lie wasn't that bad. It was in an old divot but it was ages old and the grass had grown again. Compared to the rest of the fairways (which were fairly "fluffy") the lie was a little tighter but not enough to get me to change my set up or usual swing.
Just the sort of lie you'd expect to find on a links or heathland course, rather than a "lush" parkland.
I don't remember hitting the ball any differently than normal. I was just surprised to find that I had mullered a 9 iron 145 yards when that is normally 8 iron country for me, even a 7 iron if it's uphill or wind against.

That's twice that's been mentioned in this thread, so I have a question, what's more annoying, a 3-putt bogey or a 3-putt par?

I had one of the latter on Saturday, short par 4, 288, downwind, I went for it, which meant cutting over the rough stuff that separated that hole from the next, the line was spot on but I didn't think I'd hit it very well, bit out of the toe, resulting in a high draw. From where I was looking it appeared to land in rubbish but took a huge bounce up and disappeared from view, at best I thought it might be in the bunker in front but I figured, given how weak the strike felt it was probably in the rubbish. It wasn't, the big bounce was off the back of the bunker and it was sitting on the front of the green leaving about a 30 foot eagle putt, which I promptly left 8 feet short and then missed the birdie putt (which I ran 5 feet past! Nothing like the pressure of a 4-putt bogey hanging over you to concentrate the mind!). Holed out for par and wandered off quite disconsolate, but not as much as I was after the three putts I had on the second and third holes after that, one for bogey, the other for triple! They all spoiled what would have been a very nice card up until then!

Three putts is three putts, and a shot dropped. Makes no odds whether it's for birdie, bogey or double.

Thing is, we remember the three putts, and kick ourselves, but forget the one putts we shouldn't have made, but did. It all averages out.

But surely eagle chances come around so rarely* and gives you TWO opportunities to get a shot back that it must be more annoying? It was to me anyway!

*So much so that my regular partner and I have a standard stake that pays 20p for birdies, he had an Eagle putt yesterday, so I thought I'd clarify what an Eagle was worth and we agreed that an Eagle should be 20x20p, ie 4 quid, rather than 40p. He missed the putt but got the birdie, I didn't manage to match him, 20p down, dammit!

I did point out that that would mean an albatross would be 20x20x20p, which is 80 quid but I don't think either of us are too worried about that...

Missing birdie puts gets me piss*d off and ruins my game, always has. Saturday im 8 foot from the pin on the 8th, sitting 2 down on the front 9, my partner plays hes approach and milks it through the green, chips back on and is about 6ft away. instantly think " he's one more on a put with a big sweep, im here for 2 with a straight putt, dont leave it short "

Id been leaving them short all morning so what do i do, MASSIVE putt and from 8ft i end up 3 foot past, he holes he's putt for a par, i then miss my par putt for a bogey... GUTTED

onto the 9th we both go through the green, i chip on and leave myself a 20ft putt (ball just bounced and stopped) for par, and take a bogey quite happily, he chips from the same distance to about 12ft, and cans the putt for a par..

I don't understand that. I'd happily miss 18 of them in a round and take level par. One is going to go in eventually so you might aswell just give it a decent roll at the hole.

i've hit the wrong club and had un-pleasing results!

The most recent being the mixed greensomes at Monifieth on Sunday. The 15th Par 4. 70 yards to the front.. Flag about 5 yards on... Partners hard ball doesn't spin back.. 58* will get me there nicely. Nice smooth swing.. accelerated down through the ball, very good strike. Ball is flying... get down, get down... bounces right at the back of the green and trundles on another 10 yards. How the hell have i hit 58 110 yards? Clean the grooves and ...Oh she-ite it's my 50* Pick up a 5 instead of an easy 4.
