Essex golf membership

Looking for membership recommendations in South Essex - Billericay, Brentwood, Wickford mainly. Playing off 10, would prefer somewhere challenging but also value for money.

Orsett or Thorndon park.

Having played Orsett a couple of times in Open competitions I'd also recommend it. Lovely course and the membership seem very friendly.

If considering Orsett you need to clarify what impact the proposed Lower Thames Crossing road development will have on the course. The route appears to cut very close to the south end of the course....like within 150 yards. There had been talk at one stage that Orsett might lose a couple of holes due to the development.

Other than that...Orsett and Thorndon Park are good choices. Abridge and Toot Hill might also be options.

Thorndon Park and Orsett are both expensive memberships. Thorndon is my favourite course I have played in that area. Not played Orsett but is heathland course so assume drains well all year round (unlike most of the clay based courses in Essex)

Not sure if you are new to that area, but some of the other courses in the area :-

The Bentley... quite a nice course, fairly challenging, ditchs run across fairways, like the course and a good challenge.
Hartswood….council, nice little course, used to be very cheap, fairly easy
South Essex...3 loops of nine, used to be a member here, always liked the layout
Weald Park(now called something else, cant remember)….varied layout, okay
Crondon Park...never took to the course but would imagine by now a very hard course
Stock Brook Manor...never took to the course
