What a game that was, England cruising, 20-0 up with 7 minutes to go, then Tonga score 3 tries and get another one disallowed in the last second that would have won them the game. Scandalous decision not to go to the video ref.

Hopefully the Aussies will murder them in the final.

I thought it was stripped out by Whitehead. Panel in the studio agreed it should have been a try.

And they only got to that point because the ball was stripped off McGillvary in the tackle about 40 seconds before; do you not have an issue with that?

Nothing scandalous about the decision at all.

Never a try in the memory of man. It was a loose carry every day of the week.

If Fifita has the ball under control then it would not have popped out so easily under whiteheads collision.

It was a brutal stunner of a game and I hope England rip into the Ockers next week.

England have the muscle. I am just not sure we (yes we, even though I’m a weegie) have the composure for the 80.

Jon Wilkin thought it was a try. It should have at least been reviewed. Would have been a hell of a dilemma for Ben Thaler!

I agree in super league that would have been given. Seems crazy brave to not go to the VR for that.

I’ve been really impressed by the knockout stages, seen some great rugby.

I have a feeling England were a little complacent but can’t take anything away from Tonga, who should have won it really.

If this had happened in football it would have been a different story but what the Ref says goes and you can’t look back and change things.

England have to take this, learn and keep growing as they have done game by game so far.

Nothing wrong with Whitehead stripping it if it was one on one,

And it was one on one.

but it's then play on, Tongan picks it and scores, that's what they should have looked at.

Not when the Tongan looses it forward it's not, he's knocked on, scrum down, England put in & the clock would have run out before it could be formed.

Jon Wilkin probably has a very sketchy acquaintance with the rules as a player, and I doubt that's improved as a pundit. And in fairness to Wilkin, you could apply that to the vast majority of professional sportsmen.

That’s the key point, was it stripped out or did he lose it? The fact that he then picked it up and scored a potential try meant it was a no-brainer to go to the video ref for a proper review.

The studio panel were pretty unanimous that a try should have been given.

what a load of rubbish! Wilkin’s interpretation was spot on, the video ref should have been called on to decide whether it was a legitimate try or not.

Try watching the clip of that again. The referee is perfectly positioned. As the knock on occurs he changes the line of his movement from the point of the attack to the place where the knock on was committed. He has a clear view and has already made his mind up. He has no need, and is under no obligation, to go to the video referee.

The ball isn't touched in the tackle, the upper arm is and the ball is lost afterwards, hence a loose carry and knock on being correctly awarded.

sorry mate, just watched it again. Whitehead definitely has his hand on the ball. Watch the highlights on the bbc sport website, and freeze frame at 04.11. It’s as clear as day.

I've just read Wilkin's comments from the BBC website. He considers that Whitehead steals the ball. In his opinion. No explanation given. That's a good trick as Whitehead never actually touched the ball. Immediately after Wilkin's comments are those of his coach, Justin Holbrook, who curiously agrees with the referee and gives a reason, that being a loose carry. So we have a player, players being notorious for blaming anything or anyone other than themselves, and a coach who needs to know when it is and isn't the player's fault and who would recognise a loose carry when he sees one, saying the referee is correct. I know who I'd have more faith in.

If it happened on the half way line after 15 minutes it would have been called a loose carry.

The fact it happened 10 yards from the line and 5 secs from the end doesn't change that.

Loose carry every day of the week.

Interesting that the opening poster hopes the Aussies batter us next week.

I wonder why that could be.

If they had gone to Thaler and he decided it was a loose carry, then fair enough, but we both know a SL ref would have called that as a ball strip.

As for me supporting the Aussies next week, I can support who I like, no need for snide insinuations.
