England footy... same old tosh :(

Same old story of under achievement and lack of...anything.

Having a bit of a discussion with my lad's mate about when was the last time England really raised their game when it mattered. Euro 96 against Holland? 2001 - Germany 1 England 5. Can't think of any others since then. That's 10 years of mediocrity.

"Under-achievement"???
-Reality check needed, did you see Barca last week, no-one on the England team could hold a place on that team. Why do England never do well - because they're not good enough, simples. ...sorry, I do appreciate what a great affect a positve run has on national morale but the truth hurts. :(

Totally disagree that no-one could hold a place in the Barcelona team, when fully fit.
Rio,jt,and ashley cole would have got in there team that played in the champions league final.
They had Mascherano in central defence,jt and rio are better than Pique, imo

your aving a laff! rio is worse than a three legged blackpool dunkey, milk turns quicker that captain fantastic and that wee fanny cole is finished (was good 2 - 3 years ago)

Even if I agreed with you (I don't), what you're saying is that England have 3 world class players and they're all defenders! ;)

No, what he's saying is that take messi, iniesta, villa & xavi out of the barca team and the rest ain't so special.

BTW, did you see capello looking around for Sandra Redknapp on the bench when Bent missed the first if his two sitters. What a mule, if he's the best we've got, we're in trouble

You think im mad,i dont think so,are you serious.
Anyone who knows anything about football, and i know i do,will know that a fit Rio ferdinand will get in any team.
Mascherano is a holding Midfielder who was put in defence for that game only, pique is a good player, however he is still learning his trade and imo is not better than Rio.
Each to his own oppinion, but try and be realistic.

Cant beleive capello is using the we're tired excuse.
If you were so tired, how come they got better in the 2nd half? Surely you would be more tired after 45 mins of football.

Theyre last game was over a fortnight ago. Bunch of fannies.

If you were the Swiss national team, would you look at this England team line up and fear them, even at Wembley?
I don't think they would, Rooney was suspended, Gerrard is out, who else is there?
The golden generation of 2006 (who were a good team on paper at least) seems like a long long time ago!

Rio Ferdinand and John Terry, those two world greats.....aye whatever.

They are both a long, long way past their prime and neither are as good as Puyol.

I am with Dodger. Not one England player could get in the Barca 1st eleven with Puyol and Pique as central defenders.

Paul Scholes could have cut it in the Barca midfield I reckon but I struggle to think of anyone else from England over the past few years that could.

Snelly.

Actual transfer fees Milner £26m, Bent £24m, Glen Johnson £18.5m, Ferdinand £30m

Probable transfer fees Young £25m, Walcott £20m, Lampard £15m, Parker £10m, Wilshere (god only knows!!!), Terry £20m, Cole £25m, Hart £20m...

All this shows the issue with the English game. Lescott was £26m, Barry £15m!!! With these massive transfer fees come huge salaries, bonuses, signiing on fees etc etc

They are valued as superstars, paid like superstars when none of them are worthy of that tag. In fact I'd argue that none of them are fit to clean Messi's boots let alone play in the same side.

Every five seconds another one comes out and says they are retiring from England duty. And at the head of it all is a man that cannot speak English and makes error after error. I was expecting to see Johnson and Young start on teh wings. Instead we got Milner and Walcott WTF!!!!!

I know our limitations and I'm a realist but the sooner Fabio goes and we get a half decent manager at the helm the better. If it was down to me, and everyone was fit, this would be my England side (subs in brackets):

Hart

Johnson (only because Kyle Walker is not ready yet)
Baines (Cole)
Cahill (Terry)
Jagielka (Lescott)

Parker (Barry only due to lack of options)
Wilshere (Carrick)
Gerrard (Lampard)

Young (Walcott)
Rooney (Carroll)
A Johnson (Downing)

I'm a manager of a small sales team and have had my own business in the past. I know a little bit about team motivation. I'm no Alan Sugar, but I'm not stupid either.

( Ok, well I am, but wtf I pay my subs to this forum..)

A few background points :

A) Our players might not be the best in the world, but they are perfectly good enough to win a major trophy ( Look at Greece as a comparison ).

B) The problem isn't in our potential, it's in our actual performance on the day. That is down to motivation and preparation. Which is totally on the shoulders of our management team.

C) Our current manager is showing signs of being unmotivated, and as far as we can tell, there is no pressure on him requiring success ( bonus related pay etc.)

D) The reason we were given why we couldn't sack him after the World Cup debacle was that the severence pay would be too much.

Looking at those points :

We are now a year on from the world cup, and any severence pay will be at least halved. If we sacked the manager then a replacement could be brought in with a pay structure that would be performance related. Add those savings into a negotiated settlement for non performance, and we wouldn't be too badly off financially to make it worthwhile.

The new manager would have to be either Harry or Sparky. Either one has got better motivational tools than our current leader. They will need a good defensive coaching specialist, and a tactically aware no.2.

Then we can get a squad together that is motivated to do as well as possible for their teammates and their country.

All our best teams from the last 40 years have been built around a strong defense, and a mobile, swift moving attack ( Think Liverpool of the 70s and 80s, Arsenal of the 90s and noughties and Man Utd of the last 20 years).

If we base a national team around those strengths the players will understand their individual and collective roles, and will be motivated to succeed.

As long as they are spoken to in language they can understand.

Simples

:)

It will need to be in a very basic way for the 'simples' if some stories are to be truthful!

I've slated Harry as a manager before now.

And I still wouldn't trust him with more than a tenner of my hardearned.

And he NEEDS a good defensive coach to set up the team from the back.

BUT

He has proven that he can motivate good players and speak to them in language that gets through to them.

If there are rumours of him going to Chelski for a year, the FA ought to get in there first and make better use of his skills.

And if they don't want Harry, then Sparky is the next best bet, and he won't come free in a years time. It makes financial sense to grab him now.

Think Hodgson will be in the frame again now he's resurrected his reputation at WBA. I do think a lot of the problems come from a lack of passion on the pitch and that can only come from a manager with the desire. Capello and Sven don't have the English mentality and McClaren was too nice to make the tough choices. If his bottle hadn't gone Keegan may have gotten England at least playing the right way. In fact the last managers in my opinion that had the teams playing with any sort of fight were Venables and Hoddle both of whom had played in the heat of the top division and had gotten their clubs sides playing with flair tempered with grit

Redknapp is tainted now in the same way Clough was. Sparky won't get it and the England job is becoming too much of a foreigners pension fund for my liking.

I don't think it is the managers fault, it is the fact that we stay and play on a wee island and the English players think they are better than they are as they play in geographical isolation.

Don't get me wrong, MOTD is the best viewing for any footie fan but we are watching many non English players and they in turn are giving support to the home grown players, making them look better than they are.

If English players are so good why are they not all in demand by Real/Barsa etc?

If and that is a big if, they, the English players, would stop believing the press and start to realise that turning up does not win games, s**agging teammates wives does not help the cause, causing division in the dressing room is a bad idea but maybe good for the ego at the time and maybe they should also realise that like any stock, their value is amended by their latest result!

A big size TEN is required!

The FA have not got the guts to ditch Capello now. Basically we are stuck with him until after the euros then it is time to start again. Bring in a new manager, bring in the next generation of players and give them a good long run in the team to develop. We may well lose for a while but we need to start again and build for the future rather than rely on the same set of underperforming players. They say that a definition of stupidity is to keep doing the same thing and expect different results, well England and their various managers have been doing this for years.
