Emergency - Away score???

You are breaking the rules if you alter your handicap up the way, i think your handicap sec needs to have a word with the SGU.

I thought I should have self adjusted upwards this weekend but after talking to he pro he informed me I could only self adjust downwards.

I will just have to wait for my away card to be put through by our handicap people before I go upwards by 0.1.

Is there anybody else that can add to this debate from other clubs, it looks like there are some clubs just doing there own thing and not sticking to the rules, where would we be if every club just made up there own rules. Tommo i am like you i have been playing medal golf for 30 years. I have never once altered my own handicap up the way, if i remember right years ago you had to wait till the end of the month to get your handicap altered.

This is an interesting thread and it would be good to get a definitive answer somewhere along the line.

I was under the same impression as many in that you cannot adjust yourself up. Like Tommo the scoreboard PC that we have asks if there is any alteration to your h'cap before you enter a score, however, it will not let you alter it up.

Bunkered that was indeed the case, up until maybe two years ago your playing handicap only moved up at the end of the month, although your actual handicap did increase on the computer. As handicaps are now meant to be changed after each round I would presume you are able to raise your handicap providing you are sure what the css for the competition is and you are able to calculate your actual score, ie an 8 on a par five for me with no shot would only actually count as a 7. Being able to do this when playing on a different course on a previous day would be very dificult to do. Personally I would not raise my own handicap and play off the lower handicap.

My view, for what it's worth is this.
You are playing off 20.4
You shoot 99 in an away competition on Friday.
You play the next day at your home club.
You cannot contact your handicap guy before you play.
IF you put down 21 on your card and it is wrong, you WILL be DQd
If you put down 20 on your card and it is wrong, you WILL NOT be DQd.
Why risk it? :D

Instead you play off a false handicap and a handicap that could see that day's CSS affected by the fact you are off the incorrect handicap.
I shall remain to do what I am doing and anyone who disagrees can take it up with my match Sec as he is 100 % happy with that.... ;)

So the SGU are saying you can alter your own handicap. tommo what did you do before the software came in

I've only been playing two clubs for two years. Right, my away club allows me to put it up and down. If it changes and I go up on the sunday at my home club, when I play the midweek medal at my away club, I alter it up (or down)before I put my score in. If I have a poor return at my away club that means I go up 1, I inform my home club of my score CSS and the like before I play the next medal (that can be the next day) or before I put in my next score in the home computer. That way I play and record with the extra stroke.....a stroke that I would not get back if I was second or lost out by a stroke.

The software functionality is a red herring. When you are an AWAY player you have to advise the AWAY club when your playing handicap has changed (up or down) and the prompt when entering your score allows you to do this via the system.
If you advise your AWAY club of an increase using this method BEFORE your playing handicap has been altered back at your HOME club you are effectively playing off the wrong mark. As detailed in the rule quoted, although you may believe that the increase is just a formality there are circumstances in which you may be mistaken in doing this and end up DQ'd. The rule is there to protect you from this eventuality.
The principle is that you don't go up immediately you walk off the course, you go up when your HOME club alters your handicap which could be days later. I agree this is not really fair but that's how it is.

Dodger Tommo, you should contact your handicap sec asap about this, i have just had word from the SGU that under no circumstances can you alter your own handicap up the way, it has to been done by the club, dodger the only time you are playing of a false handicap is when you alter it yourself up the way. I do not know what union your club comes under but if it is the SGU i know for a fact they would not take kindly to a cat 1 golfer altering there own handicap.
