We had a free day following a golf trip to the Belfry and decided to fill the time with a round at Edgbaston Golf Club which is a few minutes from Birmingham City Centre.

It proved to be a great decision as the course was great fun and the staff and members could not have been more welcoming.

The course is a tree-lined Harry Colt creation with a large number of elevation changes, stategic bunkering and small firm greens, its what I would deem a traditional members club but doesn't seem to suffer from the pretentiousness that normally exists at these.

The course was in great condition and started off fairly gently with the undulating terrain coming towards the end of the front nine and continuing through the back nine. Although not a long course being only 6,100 yards off the white tees and seemingly playing shorter than the yardage, the small sloping greens and well placed bunkers made the approach shots fairly tricky although the fairways are wider than they appear.

There are some lovely little par 3's, interesting longer holes and a couple of drivable par 4's to keep everyone interested, its also hard to imagine that amidst the tranquility you're only a few minutes from the city centre.

All four of us said that next time we're in Birmingham we would definitely play here again and would join all join the club if we lived in the area such was the overall impression.
