Just a couple of pics from the other day. Will add more (if I remember) throughout the season.

2nd tee: Plenty of room down the left (blind over a hill), burn on the right for the slicers. Drive, mid/long iron. Good par chance.
IMG_0180.jpg

3rd: Long par four. Need the fairways to be bone dry before I'll be able to take anything less than a 3 wood. Narrows in the middle of the fairway. Rough will be horrible in the height of summer.
IMG_0181.jpg

4th: Right of the tee, a lovely view. 148 yard par 3 off the medal tees. Often plays into the wind. One for mid-iron specialists.
IMG_0182.jpg

5th: View from the tee. Dogleg left, aim for the loch, leaves a short iron into the green which is visible, but you want to play to the left side of the green, which is blinded by a hill. Long drive off the tee gives you a full view. Haven't seen it yet  but still one you'd look to par.

Thanks for posting the pics. I was a member of East Ren late 70s early 80s - before the trees were planted. Yes - there were absolutely NO trees back then. Loved the place - and as it was open to the south westerk,y gales off the Fenwick Moor I learned to hit a low drawing ball.

I played it couple of years back by myself (knocked it round in 5 over :)) and really enjoyed it - though it is fairly short. Afterwards I spoke with a member who was also a member back then - his view was that it was much better without the trees - and that now that the trees are mature the club can't just take them out.

I think my favourite hole is the 9th - spectacular elevated tee with Faulds Farm out of bounds way down to the right.

BTW - the 5th is driveable over the hillock on the left :)

There seems to be a lot of ex-members who believe that the trees aren't a good addition. I think it lines the holes well and provides definition, as well as added danger. It's a parkland course, and therefore trees should be a given

Glad you found the course short and that you can drive the 5th. I cannot

You sir, need to practice your short game if you can hit the 5th green!!!!

Oh, and this is a long shot (no pun intended), I take it you don't have any pics of the course from 'back in the day'? Would be cool to see it tree-less.

I would add that I've enjoyed my experience at ER so far. Love the opening holes.

The SI 1 and 2 don't do it for me (blind approach shots) and I struggle with the 200 yard par 3 11th (plays mega uphill with woods down the right side), often not getting anywhere close with a driver in my hand. The previous par 3 7th, is long, but reachable. I reckon that the par 3s are a bit of a let-down.

Not sure I would call it a parkland course, looks like a typical Scottish moorland course that has had too many trees planted on it. I agree, think it would be better if they were able to take them out.

Despite growing up down the road in Greenock, it's a course I never got round to playing even though I always heard good things about it.

Yes - I thought that a curious description - thought virtuocity was kidding to be honest. Absolutely a moorland course - that's why the trees are wrong. In fact back in my day it was thought of as Gleneagles of the south - being a Braid course very similar in look and feel to Gleneagles.

I didn't say that I could drive the 5th - just that I've seen it done - by the McGregor brothers and of course ERs illustrious son - Paul McKellar.

I'm a big fan of East Ren, a great place to play when the sun is shining, expecially the holes near the Loch.

I am not convinced the 5th hole is driveable. 400 yards uphill, driver and a well hot 6i for me. No chance.

The only weak hole is the 11th, daft dog leg par 3 uphill at almost 210 yards.

Not as good as Eastwood :) but one of my favourite courses

Sorry - you are right - I meant the 6th (Oot O' Sicht)

And the 11th - I really used to struggle with the 11th and didn't like it - but I think it was more psychological. When I played last year I hit what I thought a pretty rubbish tee shot but found I ended up close to the green.

I always preferred ER to Eastwood - my mate was a member there. But that was before the motorway and the new holes. Not played Eastwood since.

At £940 for 2015 subs (and £750 joining over three years) I'm guessing that ER is quite expensive for Scottish golf. But brilliant value compared with what us poor sods down in the Home Counties have to pay.

From when I played last year - captures the essence of ER for me - but imagine it with NO trees at all.

The 6th ,that makes more sense, I still wouldn't be brave enough to have a bash at that hole either. 6th is a good hole.

I have heard it was better before the tree's although I am not convinced. I love tree lined course and wouldn't change much about East Ren tbh.

I'll keep my eye out for the East Ren open this year
