Our last course on the Kintyre trip, playing on the way home. A strong course, and a bit of a slog. Maybe we were just worn out from the last 4 days, but it felt like a real trek and beat us up on the back 9. It's a good course and a good test of golf, the fastest greens we'd played on all week, but sad to say, no real wow holes for me.

looks like you played some great courses.

I would have been the worst playing partner on those courses as i would have been distracted looking at the views and not concentrating on where my partners shots were heading :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

"Where did that go? Did it go into the dunes? "Err........, no idea......... lost it in the sun......."

We'll agree to disagree about that. Western has the better location and it's absolutely fabulous. Dundonald.is a better layout and tougher challenge.

Not much between them in my honest opinion.

Some people get a bit snobby about Dundonald, because it doesn’t have the history of other great Scottish courses. But make no mistake, it’s a cracking course built to test the pros.

I think it’s good enough to host the Open, if it was a hundred years older it would probably be on the rota.

Just back from 3 days at Dundonald. We stayed in the small lodges for 2 nights, 3 rounds of golf. £360.

When you look on their website they talk about staying in hotel rooms. There isn't a hotel, the rooms are little lodges, think Covid garden offices but posh  . They really are very nice and they are geared for golfers. Plenty of wardrobe space, area for your clubs as you enter, roomy living area, sky sports on the tv, cracking showers. All within a 50° wedge of the clubhouse. There are 6 person lodges, which look fabulous, but they are actually a little bit further from the clubhouse. Fine in summer, less attractive when darker. So, big tick for the rooms.

Before you play you can go to the practive area. Free balls, hitting off grass. There is also a chipping area and a decent sized putting area.

Onto the course. It's a quality course. Lots of shape, humps and lumps, obligatory pot bunkers, huge greens. There were lots of slopes on the greens but the pin placements meant that nearly all putts this weekend were straight. You could see how it could be funked up though. The greens had been tined 2-3 weeks ago so whilst they were good, they were not perfect. That's okay though, it has to be done and it was not an issue. The fairways, bunkers and tee boxes were immaculate.

The course is a real test. You can't be wild off the tees, some of the approaches are very testing. It's a proper course and you can see how tournaments have been held there. We played it three times, 3 very different days in terms of weather, and we did not feel at all bored with it.

One word of warning, the crows . The blighters are everywhere and some cunning local has them trained. We lost 3 balls entirely, that we saw picked up and taken away, to the canny Scot who no doubt resells them ;). We also saw them picked up and dropped elsewhere and some which were clearly hit up the middle and then never to be seen again, it was the crows guv. Nothing you can do, but be aware what is happening.

The clubhouse was excellent. They have deliberately not festooned it with golf memorabilia to encourage non golfers to come and eat and drink there. Smart cookies. The food prices were nice pub prices. Starters £6-8, mains £15-17 on the whole. Nothing scary about that. Food was all very nice so we ended up eating there both nights. It was convenient, staff were friendly, atmosphere was good.

All in all, we had a great time and we would all recommend it to anyone.

Great write up LT!
Maybe think about playing there with my bro RLBurnside sometime next year. 👍

This used to be a regular meet up venue for Scottish based forumers. Craw always got some good deals must be will over 10 years i last went

Two person. They had twin beds, presumably could be zipped together for a double if required.

There was plenty of space in them, it wasn't a struggle to get in and around the rooms, even with all of our gear in there
Not suitable for sharing with your middle aged daughter?

MIght have let the daughter have her own, and I share witht he lad
Looks like a long drive up is on the horizon;)
Cheers..;)
If you do go, there is an Affordable Golf shop about a mile away, ridiculously easy to find. It's pretty impressive and good fun to wander around. I bought a few things there, could have bought more 😊
