DSQ - doing it to yourself in a team match

This happened yesterday to one of our team players in our first competitive match. On the 10th hole, after not starting very well, he did not hole out after another triple bogey then hit his next tee shot which rendered his card as a DSQ. The people he played with knew the rules very well, told him to hole out otherwise DSQ, but he just carried on and played his tee shot on the next. I understand that he just wanted to fall on his sword and protect his handicap. Pretty gutted for the team and leaves a bad taste about the whole thing. That being no 'I' in team etc....he has a history of DSQ after poor starts....3 last year, 3 before etc...wish I had know about this before.

Thing is as Captain, the next player's, for our brut strokeplay matches, are at least 3 whole shots higher in handicap, but the team/training structure was picked back in Jan and with new clothes/kit etc it will get complicated to replace him. By the end of the week, word will get round that this player DSQ himself and others not in the team or selected for the match (we can only choose 6 out of 12 players in the squad) will feel suitably miffed.

Any helpful suggestions/experiences going forward?

Thanks in advance,

M

A stern word would

in this first one yesterday it is 6 in a team with the lowest 5 totals against the other 11 teams. The next is 6 singles and three foursomes over 2 days with the 7 lowest scores counting against 20. All strokeplay in brut off the back tees....proper squeaky bum time........generally very few people play to their handicap....out of 86 payers yesterday only 4 played to theirs...others were generally plus their handicap again and more...TBH it was v windy and on a coastal course as well as off the back tees and pins set up for a challenging day....good fun though!

Was his handicap increased by 0.1 ?
For the other DQs also?
I can't see how he is protecting his handicap if it goes up by 0.1 each time.

If you look at his avatar it says he is in France
🇫🇷
Obviously the French have different rules regarding hissy fits, NR and .1's, Surely that needs looking at as it encourages this behaviour

He is not a team player if he has done that seven times. Someone needs to tell him he is not required. His continued throwing the towel in will continue if unchecked.

If he does this it suggests his handicap is wrong and he is struggling to play to it.
always felt more pressure when playing in the scratch team.
Playing for yourself is fine but you can't do this in a team game you must carry on.
Drop him put someone with a bit more fight in the team.

Although the scores are gross, do the rounds count as Qualifying Competitions? (I'm referring to the EGA System by the way). I can't see any reason why they shouldn't be.

The follow extract is relevant

All results achieved in a qualifying round or an EDS must besubmitted, irrespective of whether they are complete or not.In the event of a NR for handicap purposes, the handicapcommittee should first consider whether the player was able tohonour his commitment to return a score or not. If he was not,and this is due to an injury or exceptional course conditions, the score should be declared non-qualifying unless he hadalready scored to his buffer or better at the time of the incident. If the player was able to complete the round but chose not todo so, the handicap committee should either apply the actualnumber of strokes (adjusted score according to Clause 3.6.2f.) or increase the handicap by 0.1, see Clause 3.6.2 g.Since an incomplete card and a NR can have the effect ofincreasing the player’s handicap, the handicap committeewould be justified in deeming the score non-qualifying when theplayer was only able play a few holes. Sections 3.13 and 3.14of the EGA Handicap System offer the possibility to considerdisciplinary measures if the committee is convinced NRs areentered to unfairly manipulate the system.

Seems to me that if he DQs when he has a bad score going he should be off the team, in any event he is playing off a handicap lower than it should be.

I agree...he should be off the team...however, our next team match is on the 1/2 April...everything is arranged in terms of hotels, clothes, logistics etc....I shall have a word and tell him how it is...issue him a virtual yellow card.hopefully he can keep his head for the next two matches....because that is all he will be playing. Someone like him will never change in the long run................oh the joys......

How is he not going up .1? Thought it works the same as in Germany where that would get a .1

Do they not have the matches as qualifying competitions in France? Can your handicap get cut in them?
