Strange one today.
Guy landed on a path ( free relief)
His nearest point of relief in the general ares was behind a tree.
But he had a closer place to drop but it was in a red staked hazard.
Is this allowed?

No. The ball was in the general area, so the relief area in this situation must also be in the general area.

He just played it off the path .

That's because of the difference between the old hazard and the new penalty area. The player may now ground his club and/or move loose impediments which he may have found useful.
