So I did a fitting this afternoon

I tried Ping, Titleist, Taylormade and Srixon. I hated the Ping from the very first hit, the Taylormade was ok but didn't fly well for me, the Srixon z U85 was good but eclipsed by the Titleist u505. The Titleist 3 iron was just a great feel and went about 210 yards on the launch monitor.

We then took the Titleist and Srixon out, with my own P790 5 iron, on to the 1st tee and I hit the 5 iron to get a marker that we were looking to beat. I hit all three well, as expected both the Srixon and Titleist went further than the 5 iron but the Titleist went furthest and felt so good off the face, and this was repeated on the 3rd hole.

So the decision is the Titleist U505 3 iron with a Project X 5.5 shaft which should arrive in about a week

I was right then, expensively! :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Without a doubt Chris, proof that fittings for such a specialist tool is the way to go, it’s not like it’s an off the leg set of irons that you like the look of and know your shaft spec etc.

I hope so and that's why I did a fitting as I was going to press the button on a Srixon Z u85 and give it a try. Also the pro I used is going to sort the sale of my clubs

Does lie angle ever factor into driving irons custom spec? All the custom options online for these that i’ve seen dont have lie angle as a custom option. Anyone know?

Given your history with keeping clubs, how long you expecting to keep this one? Thought you might be looking at a Fragger ladywood these days!!

I shall keep it all the while it behaves ?? I haven't changed my irons in 3 years and dobbed in a couple of clubs with Golfbidder which covered the cost of the new one . The only other club change was about 6 months ago whenI bought a new driver but golfbidder gave me exactly what I paid for it as I bought it off a friend ?

Think it becomes an issue if you want to play it off the deck, but if your that good you will have a forged one that can be persuaded.
Lie angle and teed up shots are not really a concern.. you address it the way you like and that’s about it.

I have a forged 1-iron like this one I've just spotted on USA ebay for $39.99
ram 1 iron.jpg
I had the full set 1-SW of these, kept the 1-iron when trading in for Ping G10 driver, 3-wood, 21d hybrid, 3&4 iron and Ping i10 5-PW.
Before the Ram Lasers I had a set 2-SW Maxfli International and I have retained only the SW from that set.

Yesterday I ditched the hybrid for the 2-iron of a Powerbilt Oversize set that I have 1-SW

Went very well from the fairway and off the tee on our longest par-3.
Might take the 1-iron out next time instead.

This year I purchased this 2-iron.

No problem hitting this either.

My favourite is the 2-iron in this set.

It could be about the same loft and shaft length of most 4-irons made recently. As it matches all the others, I find it no more or less "difficult" to hit.
I really like the wedges 8,9 and 10 that have lofts 44, 49 and 54.

Makes sense…i’m stiff shaft, green dot, +1” on my irons…should i just stick with stiff & +1” in lieu of any lie angle options? Wanting to pick up a used club so dont want to go for test/fitting-would feel bad if im not actually intending to buy from them.

My Pings are green dot, standard length (5ft 11ins, me) and regular shaft.
I don't find any problem hitting standard lie irons of other makes and years, however.
When having a basic fitting 13 years ago, I was slightly out in the hitting zone with regular lie of the Pings and needed more upright lie.
But there are different "standard lie" for different manufacturers. You just have to find something that works for you.
Also it depends on whether you are looking for or accepting that your "longest" iron will be a specialist club or something that is a close or exact match to the next one down.
I experience both these options with my various sets.
In the end, you hit the ball and it goes forwards a reasonable distance and direction, hopefully.
