Afternoon all,

Last question about drivers. I am looking at getting one, not going to spend a fortune, so I am after a bargain😁.

In regards to older models of drivers , would you just take a punt and buy one and hope you get on with it or save up and get something you could try in the pro shop or another shop first.

Also from all you lot that have tried them is there a lot of difference between models I.e cobra bio cell and fly z for example.

Cheers

Personally I'd just take a punt on an older model.
Bio cell,Xhot,G20 can all be picked up for good money on eBay.

I just bought a new cobra fly z for £119 having never hit one. Took it for its first round yesterday and I am so much more confident with it. I only played 9 holes but everything was straighter and longer than my SLDR - I just couldn't consistently hit the SLDR.

I like the sound of the fly z too, more of a 'ping', the SLDR was more of a dull thud.

Cheap punt?

Can you go wrong with £20 plus postage?

I've got a Cleveland TL310 with a regular Matrix Rul 60 that you are welcome to borrow to see how you get on with one.

Excellent head, but shaft (really quite a good one) turned out to be a bit whippy for me (had the choice, but picked it wrong!), so I tended to slow my already slow swing down! 440cc head, so pretty forgiving, but doesn't look enormous. Head apparently came from Tour (with a Stiff Matrix Code 8) but who knows. Bargain at £26 off Ebay!

Also worth finding out whether your misses are 'High-Low' or 'Heel-Toe'! I'm the former, so deep-faced drivers suit me more. I just didn't get on with shallow-faced ones like the original-ish (2001-ish) TM Burners!

Ive stuggled with drivers for years and it got to the point that I didn't own one!
After realising how much distance I was giving up to better players I asked the knowledgable chaps on this very forum for a recommendation and I ended up with a ping g15!
My god its a great bit of kit and despite the odd tree seeker ive got a lot of confidence with it

I am also looking to invest in a driver in the not too distant future. I have only ever really used a 3 wood, but the one I have only has a regular shaft and I have been told by my pro that I need stiff due to my swing speed. The 3 wood has stayed in the garage for the last few months and I play 5 iron off the tee. Although I can hit the 5 iron 200 yards, I really think I need to learn to hit the driver so I can gain the distance back and make those 2nd shots so much easier

Afternoon guy! The cobra amp cell and bio cell are very forgiving clubs,I had the amp cell and fancied a change tried the g30 which was great just the fins on top I hated! So got the fly z which is even more forgiving then the amp but I got better distance off the amp.there is a fly z + for sale on here for a price that imo is giving it away.or look at the g10 by ping which is a great driver.

would see if you could try out some first off

depends what kinda help the swing issues with driver generally give then as to type that could help some, more than others

generally if looking for 'forgiveness' as a priority so good moi you would look to a driver type that has the cg placement low and back
if swing speed is a little challenged generally higher loft would help some - so at least 10.5º

around one of the most forgiving drivers around is the fly z (not z+) few months back came out as a tad more forgiving than the g30

if flight off the tee is way low and big slices are an issue then it might even be worth looking at the fly z xl

if $'s don't stretch that far then maybes the bio cell or g25 - if possible would stretch to the z or z xl but gotta see if they fit the eye (shape/color-wise) and find somewhere to have a strike with first off

paying some mind to shaft flex - no use it having a flex that's too hard to work - so if you audition any always swing at 80% effort max don't try to beat the LM swing speed read out cause out in play when you get to the back 9 the face angle won't square up

I worked on the theory that if I purchased a cheap, older, second hand driver and found that I didn't get along with it or it was no better than the one I was already using I would resell it, on some occasions I did actually cover the postage costs out of a little profit.

From what I've used and seen out on the course in the last couple of years, a recent model Cobra (for forgiveness) or a Callaway (for crazy distance) would be my recommendation.

go get em.

Very few bad offerings in recent years so just pick what you like the look of and what is more suited to your needs. So stay away from the low spinning offerings if you are after forgiveness and vice versa.

I have a mint condition Cobra Fly Z driver I am looking to sell if your intrested

Not a mark on it, bought it as an upgrade to my x2hot but didn't test it out first and have decided I prefer the x2hot over it

Give me a shout if your intrested
