Driver Shafts

Pretty offensive coverall comment that doesn’t actually add anything to the thread, nor does it promote the sharing of people’s findings…
You haven’t actually offered anything either .. apart from negativity
Not negativity. Just an observation.

Asking a bunch of strangers for advice on a shaft selection when many have no idea what they are talking about beyond whether it says S R or SR on the side is asking to be confused. Without knowing how the clubhead is delivered to the ball any advice is meaningless. That’s why you go see a decent fitter.

Long drive competitors are using lightweight ladies flex shafts, so a playing partner telling you the shaft is flexing too much is nonsense.

Just for fun here are the specs for my lads driver and mine. Which would most of the forum put each of us in
He’s 3 inches taller than me, but 10mph slower. 102 v 92.

11° low spin head turned down to 10.25°, weight set at neutral
60g stiff Tour AD-DI half an inch long

9° low spin head weight set one click towards the heel.
65g Stiff Tensei 1k black half an inch short.

I agree about the playing partner’s observations, but sometimes the layman’s views require a bit of investigation… but that’s a choice you can make.

Going to your driver specs it’s basically balancing the heads performance… are you both using the same head?

Ball flight is the major influence for selection though.

My TSR1 is a high launching light weight head is turned down to 8.25 .. I have lofted up but I think it’s too spinny and possibly too steep in decent.

But for me shaft selection is not a flex discussion more about weight, timing and feel .. and the head and weight need to be managed which forces the shaft selection

Same head, though different lofts.

One of us needs to reduce spin, the other increase it.

Well, I just lopped off 0.75 inch off the shaft, and put on a super light grip to keep swing weight the same. Basically I am gaming a 460cc 'mini' driver. I need loft, and spin, and everything else. Because I am old, hit slightly down and want to find the fairway..

If you’re both happy with the flight you get, then that’s all you need.
To discuss changing shaft if the flight is okay is possibly nit picking… learning more about the head your using though is well worth it.
I know I am a low spin driver, none of my “numbers “ really indicate why I am a low spin player. But if I know what the head is intended to deliver I know roughly the loft and shaft type that’s required.

I was just looking back at my other drivers or past ones. I was fitted into an epic speed 10.5 head set up to 11 degrees.. at the time I was “steering “ a bit but I wasn’t aware that the head tended towards low spin. The shaft was Hazdz green im10 thing.

I think knowing this now I will go back and try a slightly higher launching shaft - different kick point, and see if I can make it work for me now.

But I will always look in future for high spin/ high launch head with as low as loft as possible. These low spin heads are a disaster for me, because they are more aimed at more common swing traits.

So the old shafts have the new titleist adapter on. They are
UST MP5 in stiff
Graf Pro Launch lite in Ladies
Aldilla NV55 in stiff
Bit of a mixed bag!
I tried yesterday the SF505 Autoflex in a 9 degree Epic Speed head yesterday.
The wind was into and right to left so may have skewed some results.
I tried at 10 degrees- far too high! ( moon shot repeated 3 times!!)
Then I dialled it down to 7 degrees ( has the pro adapter which gives a bigger range) left it neutral and flight was similar to the TSR1 .. Autoflex is funny it wobbles about when you hold it but in the swing you don’t feel that and it’s smooth at impact ( only way I can describe it to be honest) ..
I think it would have been longer but that TSR head is pretty good for distance.

Oh well things have massively changed in my driver delivery so it will be interesting to see what those 3 other shafts do … I am thinking the NV55 might be the best though but will find out.

Just to satisfy my curiosity: what's your handicap?

I’m interested in how the NV55S works, had that shaft in a couple of drivers over the years and I’m not convinced I’ve ever found a shaft that has bettered it in how it performed for me.

I did also like the old Diamana Blue, newer shifts just don’t seem to suit me as well as those 2. Hopefully a fitting I’ve got in a couple of weeks will find something that performs like they used to for me.

The adila ascent is pretty decent, but ive never had the NV55 so cant compare

If my brain is remembering specs correct , the I think the Ascent is designed for moderate swing speeds and designed to give more spin, higher launch and is lighter. Whereas the NV55 is more a mid -high launch so get a more penetrating flight and stiffer so a more stable feel for quicker speeds.

But been a while since I had the shaft so I maybe remembering that wrongly.

I have had the NV55 in a couple of Ping drivers and it’s been really good. I have RIP’d version in regular as well but at the time that felt a little soft.
I actually don’t think there is much changing in shafts, just the Korean strategy to reduce weight and they are introducing braided shafts but these are silly money..
The Pro launch is ancient as well as is the MP5 ..

Current index is 9.9 only got 6 or 7 rounds in last year due to family issues.
It has declined over 10yrs due to work but I joined the current club after being cut to 5 whilst at Ellesborough and shooting level par several times there. Prior to that a 10 year nomadic period when I was not a member anywhere and travelling the world. I would play but probably 10 times a year and that would be 4-5 rounds of rubbish and then dropping back to 2-4 over par .. the lowest I got was 3.2 and then I was told by the PGA they wanted me to do their 3 year course if I wanted to turn Pro. So I went contract as an engineer which paid 3 times as much .. had I not taken the travelling job I may have been one of those scratch players at the local club. But the travelling was an experience that few ever get to have and the people I met and fun would never have happened if I just did contract engineering.
I will get back to 5 if I can keep avoiding distractions!
