Late last year I decided that the time had come to replace my 3 wood off the tee with a driver. Went to the local range and tried a few (not easy to try everything as a leftie). Decided on one and ordered it off my club Pro, same loft and shaft spec. I've absolutely no idea what length it is, what weight, where the kick point (whatever that is) is - and I don't care. As long as that club helps me hit more FIR than SS2 says I should on my h/cap, then I'm happy with it.
I changed my irons a couple of years ago from X14's to Yonex C280's. Once I got used to them I realised that I had lost a bit of distance iron for iron. Could it be that the lofts are different? Could it be that as I'm getting more geriatric that my clubhead speed is slowing? I don't really care - I'll just club up if necessary.
And as for balls
For bounce games, particularly in the wetter months, I'll usually use pickups. I've no idea if they are one, two, three, four or ten piece construction and again I don't really care. (OK I do leave Topflights and rocks such as Donnays for others).
Before anyone jumps down my throat on this one, I know that different balls have different characteristics. If I've got a proper comp, then I will probably use a ProV1 or TP Black as I know how they react on the short game and if the comp is serious I will probably practice for a week or so with that ball. Other times I will use what comes out of the bag and just enjoy my golf - after all for me that's what it is all about
Just don't get me started on tee pegs. I've never bought one in my life, I just use what I find (and yes, I'm as English as they come). I really must try some of these superduper brush crown triangular headed wooden plastic hinged with go faster stripes tees. Apparently if you use the wrong one, the resistance of the cup at the top of the tee against the ball as you hit it will put too much backspin on the ball and you loose distance, direction, backspin, roll, or whatever.
As you have probably realised I am not a technophobe, but I realise some people are and I respect their right to so be.
