Driver Carry?

What was the course and hole? I'd be interested to know more... thanks

We have a hole with a 220 carry over a dry ditch, it is a long par 4 but I nearly always play it as a 5 laying up to the ditch. Dam thing just gets in my head and I try to smack it.

See so many people end up in the ditch

I have just realised how minor changes to stance etc. can make a big difference. I have used Game Golf for about 6 months, so winter, wet fairways, cold air......but relatively flat parkland course. Until the weekend my best drive was 230 yds and average was nearer 210, albeit dragged down by the odd duff as I haven't played loads of rounds.

At a lesson at the weekend my pro made a minuscule change to my shoulder position, straightened it (feels like it is aiming right now but clearly isn't) and a little more upward tilt. Hit a few that felt so different in the lesson. First time he had seen me hit driver.

Played the next day. Best drive 246 yards (just overshot the green on a short par 4 and almost (6" short) chipped in for my first ever eagle) and another of 242, straighter than my usual gentle fade and lower trajectory.

Convinced me that technique is critical to achieve distance and small changes do make a big difference, and that lessons are more beneficial than changing clubs. Lessons may be worthwhile for those striving for extra yards. By the way I am 52, 5'9, so age and athletism is not on my side :)

Been really struggling with the driver lately and I think I may have figured out why.
Problem is how do you bring yourself to stop it.

I've always had a love hate relationship with it.
No I know Bob will be on pretty quick to say I told you so. And go good reason.

We all have a distance that we hit our clubs bar our driver. We always want to manage to squeeze as much distance as we can from it.
I'm no different but after a winter spent trying to get more control in my game I've neglected getting the same outcome from my driver.

For my swingspeed trackman says that I should be carrying the ball about 215-225mtrs with my driver.

Now this is roughly right as I always guage my carry distance with my 3 wood on our longest par 3 which has a carry of 206 mtrs to where my 3 wood pitchmarks would be in a good hit.

Now I know most of our par 4's and par 5's have certain trees or spinneys around my driver carry distance at the sides of holes which should be making easy targets for me to achieve based on swinging within myself but I always seem to try and knock the name off the ball at the expense of control.

Maybe trying to hit the driver just to these distance may give me that control I need and make my tempo better..
Just something I'm pondering on.
I'm playing tomorrow evening again. It's something I'm going to conciously do.
Everyone puts a max distance on their irons but not the driver for some reason. Me included.

It may just piece together what's the weakest part of my game. 

With no BS here my driver carry its aroud 220 and rolls close to the 250 and thats just fine for me

Watched a Tom Watson Lesson and he says "Edel Weiss" on the up (edel) and down swing (weiss) has helped me a lot following this simple saying, also finding that for me its generating power on the down swing that makes a difference though clearly my routine and set up has to be right.

According to the AG Trackman I was on recently, I carry it 225-230 with another 20-25 yards of rollout.

So in forum terms, I probably average 285-290. I did drive our 295 yard 13th last night. All my averages are taken downwind on baked fairways.

I'm just starting out so would say i carry ~200yds on a good strike, i'm getting a lot of back spin though as you can the ball try and gain height and then drop dead with zero roll-out.

I'm seeing my pro monday for a lesson and we're going to work out whats going on and try and fix the issue as the minute my TM 5 wood is so close to my driver distance, ~185s carry with roll-out, plus a lower pentrating flight, better shape and more consistant which aids confidence its just not worth getting the driver out.

I report back on what 'i think' i'm getting to what the numbers say.

smashed my driver from the tee to the green on our first about 295 pards yesterday, to a very impressed watching fourball by the tee. "great shot"...."yeah thanks good job I took a bit off otherwise I'd have been through" :D

didn't hit another decent shot all the way round. lost 5 balls. and my temper twice.

A good "average" drive for me is around 210 carry and 230 total. I've got further than that on a few occasions and much less on numerous. I would love to push that average to 230 carry - 250 total but I don't seem to have the technique to do it consistently.

Find out how far you can hit your driver straight, then try and hit it that far every swing (not counting wind/slope etc).
Ps told you so
