Dr Bob Rotella - Putting out of your mind

Not a fan myself, read one of his books last year and was bored rigid. The ideas are incredibly simple (maybe thats the point) ie if you're in 6 inches of rough behind a forest, don't try and thread a 3 wood through a 6 inch gap to the green 200 yards away. He then backed each point up with a 6 page example of someone who'd taken his advice, it was just stretching 1 page of ideas into a book imho.

He does seem popular, maybe I'll try one of the audio books

I've just ordered it today from those jungle sounding purveyors of everything on the net. £5.oo odd not a lot to pay for what sounds like a good read.

Listening to it on my ipod sounds good. Where can I download the mp3 version? I've looked at amazon but can't find it.

Thanks

I'm going to be doing some sessions with a golf coach who specialises in this sort of mind training in April or May so it'll be interesting to compare his approach with Rotella

You are every golf pros dream Homer :D

I have never met a golfer who read one of these books and then knocked their putting strokes down by half, but I have met one whos increased by always overshooting the hole.

Hehe.... not me! I was so focused on the hole I almost always forgot to hit the ball... short every time... too many flippin' Rotella swing thoughts

Now it's pace, pace, pace, pace, pace, pace, line, pace :p

Have listened to most of his stuff and although I play of 17 I found it all a great help. My putting is much better. Still the odd 3 putt but everyone gets them even the pros so I dont let it bother me.(thats another key element in putting, there is no real consewuences in a missed putt. Putting when I think like that really makes a difference.

I listened loads of audio books when I was a sales rep and doing lots of travelling and it a great way to pick up information.

To me putting is like selling, every putt you miss means your closer to making the next just like in selling every no brings you closer to a yes....

Dont hold much stall by these putting guru types. We all should know what we have to do by now. Line it up and hit it hard enough to get to the hole , why do you need someone to tell you that in 48 chapters of a book ?

But not having read it Jammy, you have missed the central point in the 'Putting out of your mind' book. And this has really helped a mate of mine, since I recommended he read it. And this is.....

Just hit it in the hole.

Now he, like many, was geting bogged down with technique, and not just whacking it. Now true, he has a terrible stroke, but given the belief, it doesn't matter, he can still holeout, if he believes he will.

All the technical lessons won't help him, if he still doesn't think he is a good putter. Better to think he is a good putter, but have a crap stroke.

Robobum,

Very possibly but as I'm getting two sessions at 70% of the normal cost and it will form an integral part of my blog (will I improve in competitive play?) then it seems worth doing

Only pulling your leg Homer.

You are the first professional 11h'cap golfer I've ever come across though :D :D

Oh but I have read it and that is why I have the opinion I do. All it added up to was be confident and trust yourself , not earth shattering advice tbh. I could tell you that but would you listen...probs not I suppose...but thats the beauty of the world. Some people like to be told stuff from so-called experts and some people can work things out for themselves. Some people will learn but not implement it when the pressures on. Thats why we're all different h/cs and only a certain few actually get better once their natural talent plateaus off

I've been putting my stats into Scoresaver 2. Here's what I found.

Started off quite solid (no swing thoughts + confident)
Then lost consistency (no swing thoughts + not confident)
Had a lesson & bought my own fit putter putting improved (swing though + confident)
Had one bad round, putting got bad (swing thoughts + no confidence)
Read Dr Bob putting got better again (stopped swing thoughts + confident)

I've got the stats that back this trend up. I putt better when I'm confident and have no swing thoughts.

Those that say dr bob is just common sense blah blah nonsense are missing a trick.

Psychology only works on those with an open mind
To benefit from pyschological techniques you need reference points that can help you remember how you should feel
The six page stories are those reference points
The six page stories help to reinforce the fact that this is a challenge even the best players face
They help me clear my mind, judge the line, weight and be confident in my decision and hit it
They help me remember that I won't get the line an weight right every time and that I need to learn from the misread putts but not carry them with me as negative baggage
They help me remember that one putt doesn't make or break a round

I love putting now and can't wait to get it out of the bag. I love practising my putting and setting myself challenges. But that's me. The key thing for me is this type of 'training' won't work for everyone but that doesn't mean it's bad.

It worked for me and if I ever feel my mindset slipping I'll be picking up dr bob again.

I think even Rotella plays down his methods and says that it is purely common sense and not some form of black magic.

Tiger, with respect, come back and report on how good you find all this after you've just 3 whacked from 10 feet to miss your first monthly medal win by 1. Or when you've quit on a 3 footer to beat your mate for a fiver on the last. Saying this works for you when you are practise putting for fun doesn't hold too much water I'm afraid.
