Does this make sense to anyone?

Our new course manager is doing a great job in recovering our course from the mess the last guy left it in so I feel a bit guilty criticising but this does make me wonder about the logic. Our greens do need treatment to get rid of the moss so I understand it has to be done but...

The week before last, the greens were hollow timed and sanded with the last of the greens being done on Friday the day before the monthly medal. If they'd done it the week before, there was nothing on.

I now see that the second phase is starting on Monday and involves slitting and seeding the greens in the week running up to the monthly stableford and a pairs board event. There's nothing on this weekend so it could have been done this week

As I said, I know it has to be done and the course manager is doing a good job but if they'd moved both sets of work a week earlier the greens would have had a bit of time to recover before the comps.

I'm sure there's a good reason but the timing seems a bit odd

Does seem abit odd!! As soon as last season ended our green staff undertook some ground work to the back banks on two of the greens. No problem as they have had all winter to bed in. Yet 6 weeks before the season starts we decide to do major re working to holes 2,3 & 4. The work finished about a week before the season and first comp! Now with all the rain it's just a muddy bog! The work needed doing but surely starting it early the course has time to heal and repair itself. I'm not educated in this field so I maybe missing something but just doesn't add up to me!

many elements are soil temperature dependent, and these have really caused problems this year (even when you had warm air temp in the day during March)

I suspect he's looking at a longer cycle than you are as well -- ie looking at the stableford when doing the first treatment not the second, or looking at next years competitions!

do you know what's planned for the next couple of months?

There is never a good time to do work,if he had done it at a different time someone else would have moaned that then was the wrong time!

Leave it to the Professional to do what is best,believe me,couple weeks back my Head Man came in for a bit of stick about something,the 500 professionals all were telling me what he should be doing but I simply told him that I had faith in the young man and they would be eating there words soon.......fast forward and the members are raving about the place now.People seem to think that we have had a warm spring when in reality we have anything but but hey these knobs are the 'experts' aren't they?

Also, normally Greenkeepers are still servants to The Greens Committee, at lots of courses, so decision may not be 100% his.......??

At one of the Clubs Im a member at, greens were Hollow Cored before the season start, but 5 weeks later they still havent recovered, a couple of morning frosts, prob didnt help........

But u can never keep everybody happy

I got this done away with,now a greens advisor that he can bounce off but ultimately he is in charge.

Why employ a professionally qualified person and get a muppet (s) to instruct him?

I know he knows best and there are reasons and it is a long term renovation project it's just a bit frustrating that a week earlier and the comps could have been avoided. There are probably reasons I don't understand

It's my understanding but I could have been misinformed that the greens started going downhill after the greens committee insisted the greens were cut short a few years back to make them quick for the club champs. Unfortunately the last guy in charge listened to them
