Does a GC really need their pro PGA qualified?

I would say that most golf clubs would support a PGA qualified pro as it's part of the 'backbone' of golf to go thru the PGA. Whether what they teach you is any good or not is up to the person taking the lesson (but what would they know?)

If you are having a lesson it depends what the lesson is, what you want to achieve, and (to a degree) what your swing is like. Most lessons work WITH the player rather than changing their entire swing.... but then you end up with your own personal swing that looks like a box of frogs :D

Cant agree with this, as I previously stated Ive had lessons with a former tour player who is now none PGA,are you going to tell me an assistant pro PGA qualified who gives lessons knows better than my guy? Utter rubbish...

My post was agreeing with you.

I don't think it matters who you have a lesson from if it helps YOU, but golf clubs have to have someone 'acknowledged' as an instructor.

You wouldn't take your kids swimming to a pool that has someone who SAYS they are a decent lifeguard but has no accredited qualification..... unless Michael Phelps happened to be in the chair :D (but how likely is that for ALL swimmers?)

I've never had a lesson from a PGA pro but have managed to shoot under par a lot of times, I'm happy with the advice, chats and info I've had from 'decent golfers'.... but maybe I'd have been even better at the game if I'd followed a PGA set of lessons (who knows!)

Anyone can be a golf instructor but as soon as they take money for teaching they lose their amateur status and cannot play in club comps etc.

Been on my mind for a while this, does a GC or range really need their pro to be PGA qualified?
After all ive had great lessons and great advice when dealing with buying equiptment from a former tour player and a club pro who were no longer PGA,but for some reason most GC's insist their guys PGA,surely experiance is the only key requirement for a golf pro, begs the question?

I think the one issue that is overlooked when this discussion arises is the one of accountability.

Accountability on the part of the Pro to uphold his standards of integrity and general professionalism. The PGA member is answerable to the governing body in terms of behaviour, appearance, financial dealings with customers, solvency etc, behaviour on the golf course in tournaments and general play, and also behaviour in his private life. Obviously this doesn't make everyone any angel, who the heck would want to be, but a pro who is not a member of the PGA does not have to be answerable to any governing body for any of these areas.
