Been on my mind for a while this, does a GC or range really need their pro to be PGA qualified?
After all ive had great lessons and great advice when dealing with buying equiptment from a former tour player and a club pro who were no longer PGA,but for some reason most GC's insist their guys PGA,surely experiance is the only key requirement for a golf pro, begs the question?

I would have thought that a pro needed to be PGA qualified to give lessons.

The assistant Pro I have lessons off isn't fully qualified, yet. He gives group lessons at the club also.

I think he has his final exams and results around May this year, but he's very well known across the Midlands and has won almost everything worth winning in the county and further afield, so for me, that's qualification enough

Don't even need a pro necessarily but no golf professionals don't have to be qualified in any way. It just helps people to know what they are getting/that there has been a minimum standard of training.

Someone could learn all the skills outside of the PGA system and not pay them a shedload of money for their brand stamp and I guess we will see more and more people doing so.

Think I remember Mark crossfield saying Andrew rice is a good teaching professional who isn't pga qualified. Can't see how they can stop anyone giving lessons if not pga qualified... it's just advice after all

I would say that most golf clubs would support a PGA qualified pro as it's part of the 'backbone' of golf to go thru the PGA. Whether what they teach you is any good or not is up to the person taking the lesson (but what would they know?)

If you are having a lesson it depends what the lesson is, what you want to achieve, and (to a degree) what your swing is like. Most lessons work WITH the player rather than changing their entire swing.... but then you end up with your own personal swing that looks like a box of frogs :D
