Interesting to read in the 3/4s thread about certain h'cap groups not entering comps because they don't think they can win.

Does anyone actually do that? Or is it hearsay?

My view is that it would be pathetic to look at it like that, but would be interested to hear justification.

I don't enter competitions at my home club but play as many as I can at my away club then also a lot of opens which are generally chosen on the quality of the course.

I dont play many matchplay comps after years of messing trying to organise the match , normally in the last few days allowed ,

apart from that i play in what ever is on most weekends , ive played in 5 scratch cups this year well knowing i wouldnt win them .. did hope to make buffer or sneak a cut , didn't happen tho

Enter anything I can really

Me too, mind you i cant understand people who don't like to play in competitions at all.

Thinking "im not playing because I cant win" is pathetic and probably part of the problem why they wont win.

I play in everything. Including the singles, 4BBB and Greensomes matchplay comps.

Play everything except the handicap knockout - play in the scratch one

Also don't put my name down for the summer knockouts in mixed or men foursomes.

Play all the medals , stablefords , bogeys , greensomes etc

If there's a Stableford or a Medal and I can play in it then I will.
Don't get to play as many as I would like but I play as many as I can.

Play in everything I can, but don't enter the knockouts (which really annoys me as I LOVE all forms of matchplay) as I find it really difficult to fit in matches in weekdays, due to work and transport.

I enter just about everything but the only one I enter actually hoping/wanting to win is the club championship. Everything else is more about performing well relative to myself, trying to get the handicap down, trying to have fun etc etc.

However, next year I'm going to be more selective about what I enter. I play a lot of golf, most of it competitive and I need to balance things a bit better.

The low point for me was teeing it up for a tie this year having played (competitively) the previous five days in a row, genuinely not wanting to be there and seriously considering conceding the match.

So I'm not entering the club knockout comps because they are a pain to get ties arranged (especially 4somes) and because I often don't enjoy playing in them. I might also miss some comps if they come at times when I'm already playing a lot of other stuff.... I need to minimise the weekends I'm playing both days, or I'll be in trouble!

If i dont have anything else arranged and there is a comp on, I will enter it. Can through periods where you dont play a comp for months tho with the knock outs, club matches and summer sunday 4balls, which can be a pain, but if i dont have anything on I try to enter the comps.

One of my friends isnt at the moment because his game is really quite bad right now and he wants to take the pressure off so until he has some more lessons and gets settled he will just play with us/other people but not enter the comps. Saves him £6 a go so thats fair enough.

I'm not good enough to win the scratch events and feel I don't have enough shots to win the stablefords, I've never shot 40+ points

that said I play in as many comps as I can get to but given the choice I would always choose a scratch event over a HC comp

much rather lose to a better player than a piece of paper

I have always played in every comp that I can.

Now I am nearer the holy grail of single figures I might not want to play in a monthly medal/Stableford if the conditions are so bad I could only get a .1 addition. As most are done as roll ups I can decide on the day
