Do you pick your comps?

Gave up playing in all the knockout match play comps at my club. Too much hassle getting some folk to agree a date, then the others that try every trick in the book to win. We play in the normal one day 4bbb comps.
A new thread coming , about excuses , and tricks.

I work at weekends from July until end of May so I've played very few in recent years - now I'm 55 I'm going to work at my golf over the winter and play as many senior opens as I can next year and as many comps at my home club as I can - also going to enter all the singles matchplays - and look for a partner for the greensomes and foursomes matchplay too. Also play three or four mixed opens with the missus each year.

Tend not to play the one bogey comp we have and not a huge fan of foursomes (but did play in it this year), will play in most things (albeit tend to be avoiding 36 in a day lately which did rule out the scratch knockout qualifier :( )

Play in every comp I can, I really enjoy the competitive challenge with the exception of Greensomes as I hate that format.

I play whatever someone else is prepared to organise!

Not particularly keen on a couple of formats, but that's not what it's about.

If it can affect my handicap and I'm not working/out of the country/at yet another badly timed wedding, I'll be there. And a few of the ones that don't just because someone asks

I play in all the Saturday comps I'm around for plus most of the mid week comps. I really don't like bogey comps and every time say I won't play in the next, I always do! I can see the reasoning of people not playing though. I've played in 3/4 comps with a limit of 24. I'm now playing with a hcp of 18 so to place anywhere I have to play the golf of my life. Usually ends up a waste of £3.50 but in it to win it etc it could be that day!

I play in any comp as prefer competition golf to a knock around. Never really bother with winter league or knockout comps as arranging matches is such a hassle especially when you work and you are playing someone who only plays midweek

This is interesting to me

"Don't like match play"

"Don't like bogey" etc

They are both played with bat & ball with same objective: ball in hole ASAP.............why not these formats?

I kinda get the 4somes thing, especially if its you one game of the week.

Its not the actual playing knock out match play that I don't like, its trying to arranged times to suit everyone.

Interesting to read in the 3/4s thread about certain h'cap groups not entering comps because they don't think they can win.

Does anyone actually do that? Or is it hearsay?

My view is that it would be pathetic to look at it like that, but would be interested to hear justification.

I enter everything that comes up at my club..... Sometimes im backed into a corner in that one or two of my playing partners wont enter pairs comps which sidelines me in a way..... Their opinion is that they are not good enough to win them....

My thought is i enter everything to win it... It might sound cocky to some but i dont see any point in entering a competition just to say you did..... I always try and win whatever i enter.....
Ill play as many scratch cups as my handicap will allow home and away....

I play whatever I can when and wherever I can. It's never about whether I can win or not but for me it's all about trying to get my handicap down and be the best golfer I can be. Play well and I find the results take care of themselves. I certainly wouldn't duck an event, with the exceptions of alternate shot formats which I hate, because of the format.

I'm not good enough to win the scratch events and feel I don't have enough shots to win the stablefords, I've never shot 40+ points

that said I play in as many comps as I can get to but given the choice I would always choose a scratch event over a HC comp

much rather lose to a better player than a piece of paper

Lose to a piece of paper ! Strange comment

I have more chance of winning the scratch knockout playing off of 9 then I do the handicap! And for that reason I do not enter the handicap ko

Fair play, you're the first to own up.

What do you lose by playing in it? £5 entry fee.? Pride?

I don't like matchplay because it doesn't suit my mentality. Whenever I play golf I want to try to shoot as low as I can and that isn't what matchplay is about. I also hate trying to arrange the matches.

I don't play foresomes because I don't get to play enough golf to waste time playing half a round.

I'll just about cope with Greensomes and 4BBB but given the choice I'd play a medal.
