Following on from a few recent threads with people describing their shot shapes/ball flights. I've decided to make some pics just to clarify some shot shapes etc. Hopefully it will prove to be a good reference tool once I've made a few pics.

Here's the first one...

Both ball flights are the same but they are not the same shot. Just to state the obvious the white line is the TARGET LINE.

A fade starts left of the target (RED LINE)
To hit a fade you have to swing from out-to-in with the club facing down the target line at impact.

Here's the QUIZ part on this first pic:

What would you call the shot in YELLOW? and/or how to hit it?

Na it's a held up shot in to a strong left to right wind....an extremly easy shot which is played according to my good friend, who plays golf 6 times a year and to a 22 hcp, by simply moving the left hand over a bit and showing another knuckle....

Seeing as the yellow ain't straight. I'd go with a push fade.

Maybe a mild slice.

Anyway. How to play it. Tough I believe that there are many ways to achieve this.

Closed stance. Closed shoulders. Body not clearing through early enough during down swing. In to out swing with open face (for the push part). Weak grip. Though the slicey bit could be. Open Stance. Out to in swing path. Weak grip. Body clearing to soon in down swing. Hands not rotating on downswing. Casting over the top. Ball position. Incorrect alignment of clubface at set up (open).

I could well be wrong. But all this is off the top of my head. I'm no expert, and I'm not that good at this game. But what the above does prove to me is that you need an expert to cast their eye over your swing to see which elements are causing the problems. As you're unlikely to be able to self diagnose accurately.

I'm guessing your drawing shows a ball fading off to the right on both shots?

In which case, I'd say the yellow line was a small push with a fade on the end.

How to hit it? a little from the inside without squaring the face, leaving it open a tiny bit?
Is this a trick......?

It could just be a slight push with a L-R crosswind.

The yellow is how I used to play golf, the red is how I now play golf. Don't much like either, but if they're on the short stuff, I'll take either! :)

Picture 3:

The shot shape in red is a DRAW, this one could also be referred to as a 10 YARD DRAW as it appears to move 10 yards right to left in the air. It starts right and lands slapbang on the target line.

What would you call the 2 shot shapes in YELLOW? and how do they occur? (swing path, clubface etc)

is this thread actually going anywhere? :Dit is all hypothetical as all these could be straight as a die shots hit by the wind...or the yellow on the right in pic3 for example could be a faded shot against a 40mph wind that would naturally move right to left as it loses its momentum....

Leave off mate, you don't have to reply. I'm interested in all the shot types, seems a fun way to discuss things

They all happen to me when stood on the tee

I always wonder which way is this going to go right trees or left trees

I dont find many fairways
