today i met up with a old pal for a game of golf. when he is short pitching or chiping he holds the club more in the palm of his hands. he said it gives him more control. i give it a go and was awefull. he told me to stay with it and it'll come good.

does anyone else change grip depending on the shot? apart from putting that is

Yes, I do.

For my drives the thumb on my right hand is further over. For all other shots my thumb points straight down the shaft.

I use a putting grip, left hand forefinger overlapping when playing short chips. When I had the chipping yips I used to chip left hand below right.

I use a neutral grip for everything but putting. For putting grip with both forefingers more or less down each side of the shaft. To draw or fade the ball change my stance open or closed.
