Hi,

Having a lot of trouble lately getting a clean shot from my 5 iron. 6 iron with the same set up goes off nice and cleanly.

what adjustments to your setup do you make when you start getting to the longer irons?

In theory, not much difference. Irons get progressively harder to hit consistently well as you move through the set as they get longer and keeping the clubhead accurate to the ball is therefore more difficult. The setup is fractionally further away and fractionally further forward than a 6 iron but you will probably always find that a certain iron is the one you hit confidently and the next one less so. Given the choice in a critical situation you will probably elect to be 10 yards short that risk duffing the "right" club, especially in medal play. For me, that confidence level is between 4 and 5 iron.

Hi,

Thanks for the response, and yep agree sometimes I try to get a bit too confident and go for the full distance as opposed to dropping the 10yards and accepting the outcome, I suppose that's where the course management and knowing your strengths and weaknesses come into play.

How modest of you to say...off an impressive h'cap.

I was looking over my last 8 games and noticed that my 5 iron is the absolute pits. Off a tee, I can hit it both ways no problem. I have a 4 iron which holds no fear at all...interestingly it is the 14th most forgiving club ever made on the Ralph Maltby chart; a Callaway Big Bertha 2002.
Clearly for me, with a 5 iron in my hand off a tight lie, I just panic.....and yet a 4 iron (different make) or 3/rescue is just child's play.

Practice, practice. When I'm swinging well, I take clubs like 3+5 wood, 3r/4/5 iron down to the range, throw the rubber tee down in another bay and just hit the bloomin' ball off the mat until I've got the feel.

I dont really fear my long irons and i hit them pretty well most of the time unless im feeling tired but this is how i set up....
I play 4 and 5 irons off my left nipple
6 7 and 8 off the left side of my groin and 9 and PW and 52* off my zipper.....
I play my woods off just inside my left heel and my Hybrid roughly where id play my 8 Iron...
Im not saying it'll work for you but it may help. ;)

Personally, I just use a tee peg. ;)

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be smart. Just saying for me (yes, off 6) the boundary is 4/5. For OP it may be 5/6. Nothing wrong with that. I suppose I'm thinking the setup (original question) isn't much to do with it and it's more a confidence thing.

I was trying to be generous to you actually. I really meant it, it was modest of you (off a h'cap which I think IS impressive) to say that 4/5 iron was your "point" where you weren't 100% confident. I know plenty of players that wouldn't admit to that....so well done to you for doing so.

Interestingly, my sister bought me a club for my birthday which arrived yesterday.....a hybrid/rescue 5 iron. I can't wait to try it and see if I can be more confident 175 out!

:)

I don't make any difference in my set up other than moving the ball a fraction further forward for the 5 iron. Other than that I can slice and hook both with absolute conviction but just don't ask in advance which way it'll go

I rarely use any part of the club face than the toe, bottom edge or hozel. Cavity back, blade, makes no odds. Set up neither.

That said, I can scab it round in 82 most times.

This sweet spot nonsense, what's it all about?

The setup is fractionally further away and fractionally further forward

that one made me think. In all the set up instructions and graphics the difference in ball position is always illustrated as a straight line never as an arc, which is what it has to be and what you would (I hope) do instinctively.
it does raise the question though, how many beginners try to hit longer irons too close in?
