• Thank you all very much for sharing your time with us in 2025. We hope you all have a safe and happy 2026!

Did you play golf this weekend.

Im in such a bad place mentally at the moment finding the will to go and play is v difficult.....In fact I nearly jacked it all in on Sat...:( I go from making a solid birdie to not evening hitting it on the same planet.... I know its only a game, thats golf etc etc yeah right!! but Ive always been competitive and play many sports over the years and some to a reasonable level..... 8 weeks ago I could miss shooting well under my handicap and obviously enjoying every minute, plus it lasted for over a month!! The huge amount of inconsistency in my game at the mo is testing my resolve now..... I can take missing the odd put, duffing a chip or the occasional slice but when I cant even hit the ball probably after years and playing to single figures Im at a loss to why I bother.....Im wide open for advice or suggestions here as my clubs/kit are close to being on the bay!!!

I have been playing for the best part of 25 years and my lowest handicap was + 2.4 but the last few years have been a bit of a struggle TBH what with the weather we have had over the last few years and work commitments. I started this season of + 1.3 and have managed to play a few competitions/Opens which have all resulted with a few .1s here and there and a few cuts to go along with it. My goal is to get to + 3 and stay there for a while, I play the game because I enjoy it and have a bunch of mates who enjoy it as much as I do, practice is the key and picking the days to play when you know your in the grove. I don't play competitions every week but put a lot of time in at the practice area.

Cool, what's your home club?

Could be usefull to tell us all your practice regime as most of us (me included) like practice but its important to practice the right thing.

Lets organise a knock, then you will see you are not as bad as you think you are! call it a public service, once you see me play, you will think you are tiger woods!

In the summer months I will practice 3-4 days per week and each session will last between 2-3 hours and involve hitting 300 - 400 balls each time. Most of the shots will be with my irons as the driver is normally straight forward and I can work the ball either way but the stock shot is a slight 5 - 10 yard draw. Most of the work is spent on the short game as this is the key point in the game and classed as the scoring clubs, our facilities are well equipped and have multiple greens set out at 50 85 120 150 175 & 200 yards from either end of the park. I tend to always practice into the wind as this allows me to help play a more controlled shot and helps me to work the ball rather than just hit the ball in a straight line. Always start with the wedges then on to the long irons and always finish back with the wedges, if I have time I will then go out and play 4-5 holes if the course is quiet.

To be honest I am more than happy to spend most of my time on the range hitting balls than playing bounce games on the course as I get more enjoyment from it, only draw back is having to go collect the balls.

Played Sunday and had one of my best rounds this season (6 under my handicap) then played Monday in a medal but with the high winds managed to knock it round in handicap so missed out on a cut.

A bit gutted as I messed up on the last having recently nothing higher than a 5 and mainly par 4's, I took a 7 to miss out on an under handicap round and any chance of getting back to 18. If you looked at my card you would think I was sandbagging on the last to protect my handicap as everything else was neat enough - then you may notice the tear stains after I reaslised that I would have had the cut if I hadn't messed up so badly!!

But where do you play?

Played Oulton yesterday shot 103 playing off 26 hc. Couple of 8's, 1 par and mainly 5 and 6's. Driving is too inconsistant, my irons were pretty good, bunker practice is needed but far too many 3 putts after getting on the green for birdie/par chances.

Played in the medal on Saturday and managed to make the buffer, first time for a while. :whoo:
I had a nett 74 CSSS on the day was 72. That was despite losing two balls and having a penalty drop.
Five fairways hit and four greens in regulation and 28 putts. Just looked at HDID to find out I was only person on the day to birdie the seventeenth.
Hopefully I will be able to continue like this for at least a couple of weeks.

28 putts, so why did I buy a new putter lol

I appreciate the offer thanks! :) Def one day! The thing is with me its not the actual game itself... Im not striking the ball badly and I have a few good holes at least on every round... its the mental side so acceptance and the ability to bank a bad shot, accept inconsistency and move on.... I struggle to control the emotion sometimes and its tough to break away from that and just enjoy the day which I know I should do.... sad git I know!!! :)
