My father wasn't (isn't) a sportsman, I was lucky if I could get him to even watch me play football as a kid. Seeing TXL playing golf with his son the other day made me think just how cool it must be to spend some time on the course with a parent/child... maybe it's not what I think it might be (Dad moaning all the time maybe?) but it sounds like one of those things you don't appreciate until it's gone...

Did/do you play golf with your parents? What's it like?

Never got to play with my dad he's not interested at all, but did play few times with my grandad who introduced mr to the joys of this great game was pretty cool from what I remember many moons ago.
Since I have played many rounds with eldest nephew and now I have my own son (3) can't wait to get him on the range! Hopefully he will feel the same.

My dad isn't interested in golf although he will watch it on the telly box with me. It was my uncle who started me out playing golf almost 30 years ago when I was about 5ish

Nope......I come from a totally Golf Free family background
But my son does now play.
Ive had him to the range, practice ground, on/off for years, but never pushed, only when he wanted to.
Then jan 2011 I joined him at my club.
His interest just Boomed
Lots of kids of same age range, they all swap mobile numbers, texting, BB Message (woteva) and arrange to play themself, especially during last summer holidays.
And he really, really, wanted to be there.
I was overjoyed.
The club put in blue tees on the front 9, to shorten the course and make it playable for juniors under 13 or of lesser ability, which was fantastic, instead of struggling off yellow/red tees.
Lots of comps during school hols.
I would take him out whenever I could when not at work, and his game, technique, and desire to play grew and grew.
Anyway, it concluded last summer, that after being runner up twice, and 2 x 3rds, that he Won the Final junior comp of the year, and Won under 12 Player of the year ( they have U12 & 12-18 sections)........!!!!
Presentation night, I was bursting with Pride.......Picking up his Trophies, wow, admit it was quite emotional (wota soft lump) and we got some good photos
Hes 12 now, hes never going to be Rory, but Im so happy that he is enjoying and wanting to play this great game, and if in 10 years time hes still playing, and were teeing off together, then I will be ONE HAPPY PARENT

I play occasionally with my son, he's now 29 and we've had games since he was about 15. I absolutely love to go out with him and as I had no father of my own around as I grew up, it is a wonderful feeling. He has just stopped playing football and I hope that he will soon take up golf more frequently. He's 6ft 4 and hits the ball as sweet as a nut, a definite single figure player in a few years.

The beauty as he has got older is that I don't have to tell him off on the course, in fact, he tells me off now!

You'll love when you get the chance James

Many years back I part taught my dad to play the game, and he's been addicted ever since. We used to be members at the same club and play together most weeks, nowadays we're a bit further apart but try to get together regularly for a game (helped by the fact he's a member at Brocket Hall so I happily go to his).

Me and dad have always got on well, main bond being through sport and time on golf course just an extension of that. In the past weve been away for golfing weeks etc and to me with regards to golf (and life) hes pretty much my best mate and one of the better golf partners out there :)

Played a few pitch and putts with my Dad but alas he passed away when I was 18.

Played quite a few 9 holes with my daughter which was really cool as she was living with me at the time and we played last time I was over in UK.

yep I play with my Dad about once every couple of months. I do enjoy it, he is truely rubbish. his best stableford score is about 30 points off 28.

It is his stated ambition to beat me on stableford. he came close to it at North Wilts last summer. He was 4 points up with 2 holes left and went blob, blob and I crushed his dreams & won by 2. He's been playing 3 times a week for about 3 years and hasn't improved but he enjoys it. it's important for these older chaps to have a hobby!!:D

It was my Dad who introduced me to the game. Although he worked seven days a week, he did occasionally manage to get away for a game and take me with him. He bought me my first set of clubs when I was about eight years old, a ladies set which was shared with my older brother, (He got the odd numbered clubs and I got the even ones). We were also lucky enough to have a golf course on our doorstep so we would nip on in the evening with a single club and ball. Great days!

didn't play golf with him but he walked round the course with me a few times when i was playing in tournaments and he was a pain

the worst was at stirling golf club,i played well though shooting level my handicap back in 1999 +7.

the best time i had was at genisla back in 1999 when i played the qualifying for the scottish junior masters and my mother and grandpa walked round supporting me.....i played out my skin that day and was chuffed they were there to witness it.

back in the days when i was a lad, golf was a mysterious game game played by professional people who could afford the equipment and club fees -not for the likes of us, so never played with my dad. i never had the time to play during my working life and neither of my daughters had any time for sports, so nothing there. when i retired, youngest daughter remarried and new son-in-law persuaded me to get some cheap kit and start playing - now enjoy going round with him regularly. 2 of my grandsons, aged 14 & 15, both play on an irregular basis and they have no problem in taking me with them. so, didn't play with my dad, but now the younger members of the family will at least have the memories of dear old grandad hacking round the course!

Like most kids in Scotland I had swung a golf club since a very early age. My dad had never lifted a club until I tried to get him interested when I was in my early 20s. He started out at the driving range, played a few rounds at the pitch & putt and eventually he was ready to take on the full course. I think his nerves got the better of him even though we were out at a quiet time late on a Saturday afternoon. Although he went to the range on occasion after that, he never went back onto a full course again. He eventually sold off the clubs he had been using to a friend. He passed away in 1995 and one of the many things I wish we could have done would have been to play a regular game of golf together.

My dad was virtually born on a golf course and was a golf (and general sports) nut. S/f handicap, good wicket keeper batsman, and nippy inside right. I was the only one in the family who shared his interests but sadly, whilst I inherited his enthusiasm for sport, I got none of his talent. He introduced me to the game as a yong kid and spent ages with me hitting balls at a local field and caddying when I played with my brother-in-law. Some of the happiest days of my life. I was a late child and he had given up playing by then and sadly age and illness caught up with him so we never actually got to play together that much when I was older. One of the great regrets of my life.

The joy of golf is,for me, that I get to play with my 10yr old son and 73yr old Dad. We all get equally frustrated, gain great enjoyment-just from different aspects. It really is the only sport I can do this with-and has brought us together in a whole new way.

Never played golf with my dad. Was actually discussing with my brother the other day, our dad never really did anything with us, except take us to a pub where we could play on the green outside whilst he and mum went in for a drink, or to the "club" (local working man's or conservative or company - depending on where we were living) whilst he played in the darts/ snooker or pool team. He never came and watched me play football when I played for the local team or the cubs. The only time he took me to play football was when I was old enough to join in his work 5 aside practice with him.

I play golf with my son every week, sometimes two or three times a week

My Dad got me a Junior 1 wood when I was interested in golf. Was all he could afford at the time and I tended to jump from sport to sport but other mates had clubs so we shared. He never played but pretty much let me do as I pleased as long as I was outside so fishing, cycling, football, Ice Hockey, golf and bowls, mountaineering all featured at some point.

I know now he liked it best when I could do the sport, he'd take me and sit watching having a couple of pints!

So the bowls featured more and I won a couple of trophies, but the golf, and very occasionally fishing, climbing & cycling still play their part.

But aye ye miss them when they're gone, so already had my 6 year old at the range, he now has a nice set of Callaways and we're out on the bikes quite often as well! I reckon this is the age to go for it in the father/son side of things cause ye seem to loose them from 13/14 onwards and I didn't like the toddler stage. This is much more fun.

My dear old dad :(.
He introduced me to golf & we shared many memorable rounds together.
Fondly remeber staying at Trevose with him & my twin brother.
We also played at Almerimar together, many moons ago.
Regularly played The Berkshire courses, St. George's Hill & his all time favourite, Swinley Forest.
Played many times at his course, Pyrford in Surrey.
Unfortunately he passed away a few weeks ago, so memories is all I've got..................plus a fabulous photo of him holding the Ryder Cup when it was on show at Pyrford.
Cherish the moments, you don't know when they'll run out,
and hold on to the memories,

Slime.

I was more into football growing up and my Dad although he spent a large amount of time ball hunting at Stoke Poges never really played golf. The closest I got to this was going over Stoke Park (then what used to be a massive field with rugby and football pitches adjoining Stoke Poges GC) with my Dad and my older brother for golf practice. I must have been about 7-8 yrs old.

I bought my son who is now almost 12 a junior callaway set and I will get out to play a lot more with him this year.

Never golfed with Dad as he never played... My father in law took up the game late on in his life and I had the pleasure of joining him on a regular basis... We got very close because of this mutual interest...

Recently my own sons [now in their 30's] have started showing an interest in playing... So I now have the pleasure of their company out on the course... Which I really enjoy...
