Or, well that has really messed things up!

Due out 8am today in a medal, although for me it was my first opportunity to have a card marked for handicap assessment, so first time off the whites and first time with a card in my hand for a long while.

During my 4 year nomad time I have been a regular user of a smartphone DMD – often on my own and often on unfamiliar courses. Now they seemed a pretty relaxed bunch at my new course so far but as I had read the many threads on the forum I know I am not meant to use so it stayed at home.

One of the three could not make it, so we were a two ball and as we both were there early the pro said we could go out ahead of the 3 ball who should have been out first. My playing partner for the day was off 11 which seemed great as that was my last active handicap.

I had pre decided I was going to play steady – no driver on front 9 and just aim to keep in play.

To cut a long story short I rocked in with a 77, +5 gross! :whoo:

I knew I had a good round going, my marker was good, but he couldn’t resist after I holed a 4 ft for par on 15th saying I’d be on for a lower handicap than expected. Cue thoughts creeping in. Was really pleased to then par in thanks to some outrageous putts.

Now it was a cracking day, the course I’m told is generally fairly windy but not a breath today. Fairways running and the rough had been cut back for pros day last weekend. So maybe the CSS will drop.

But where does that leave me on the handicap assessment? Two more cards to submit, does it matter what they are now – will this one be the one that is used whatever?

Probably blown any chance of comp wins for the foreseeable, but it is all about the handicap and gross right ...

Does that how did you do site allow people to see how the comp went? I can’t register yet.

p.s. would probably single out my putting and iron play today but it must be said that the new Adams kit was used on 15 tees today. Definitely liking the 17 hybrid.

Shocked of Oxfordshire

Good shooting that, well played.

They should take the lowest card but since that one would put you in Cat 1 they would have to get approval from your local union so I guess it will depend on your next 2 cards.

What was your h'cap last time you had one?

Cheers HawkeyeMS - I had actually been following your recent progress and was hoping to take some inspiration from it! Better go and read the "coping with a new handicap" thread again just in case!

Have a handicap cert from late 2009 of 11.3, (and one from early 1999 of 10.8).

Thats a cracking round! Well played that man, i shouldnt worry about CSS it is irrelevant to you for your initial h/cap cards.
From what youve said previous h/cap of 11ish so +5 is well below that, you'll obviously have to do the other 2 but my guess would be further investigation into your h/cap history and possibly 5.5 so your not having to go throw the county union.

Good score! That wil take the pressure off any other cards. Just get them in and join in the competition fun. I think they also knock any double bogies down to bogies as well, but not sure the whole handicap stuff is a mystery to me now.

For initial h/cap cards trebles ate reduced to doubles for comps once you have a h/cap scores are rounded to nett doubles in medal play to equate to the minimum you can score in stableford and not Get any points.

Blimey, don't think I've ever been an inspiration to anyone before - glad to be of service :D

Great round. And 'good timing' as well!

Remember that it's SSS that's reference point rather than Par, so maybe not Cat 1 - yet!

Get those other 2 cards in asap, but I hope they are around the same mark.

It's going to be a nice first official handicap!

Why doesn't CSS come into it as the card was submitted under competition conditions, that's an indication of conditions on the day? Strange one, is that definitely the case?

Thanks for all the comments. To cover off some points;
SSS is 72 (6527 yds).
Actually there are no doubles on the card, in fact no sixes at all (didn't a newspaper used to do something on that years ago?)

Realistically I know my game is not currently ready to repeat this regularly but am definitely pleased to have done it and will take confidence that it is in me and will try to on the next cards. Funnily enough was just saying to wife the day before that maybe I would never be as consistent as I was back in my late twenties, a I felt I was playing well in spurts but could not keep it going for more than 3 or 4 holes.

Spent most of rest of weekend up a ladder on the endless DIY, so back to reality!
