Not the best kept secret, but end of July beginning of August I am going up to Ping at gainsboro to get measured up for a set of irons 5-PW. Anyway earlier today I took young Bradley Tash up to the range to "smash some balls miles". His words not mine.
Anyway whilst in the shop I asked about using a couple of irons. I was given a 7 iron from the G and G max range with differant shafts. Basically I was " smashing some balls. Ball flight, distance and hang time was excellent. I was impressed, very impressed.
However, there did not seem to be much differance between the two. Re the shafts. How would I know which is/was better. I have loads of questions to ask which am sure Ping will have the answer to. but the one over riding question is this.

I had got my head around going to Ping July/Aug time ordering them through my club. But now I am asking myself why am I waiting that long. Should I go sooner rather than later. Me flippin head is spinning. My only reason to go at that time was to save as much as possible in vouchers to help pay for them. But now am thinking why wait.

Sometimes the final decision between what shafts comes down to the numbers on flightscope. You just can't physically tell the difference without the aid of technology.

Also, look at what your worst ones are. If one set give you better worst ones, they are the ones to go with. You'll find it difficult to separate your best ones but your worst ones might just give you a better idea.

If you get the chance, hit the longer irons. They'll give you better feedback on what's easier to hit.

Cheers hobbit, the odd thing about what you said is a guy once told me at work who has been playing the game years. "It's not how good your good shots are, it's how good your bad shots are".

Hello mate, I had a similar experience with Titleist, the clubs I settled on were not the longest I hit, but gave me better dispersion front to back and more consistent accuracy.
I'm sure like you say Ping will spend the time with you and don't make any decisions till you're completely satisfied, you don't want to take delivery of your new clubs and then stand over them wondering if you have the right clubs, my mate went with me and at the end of the fitting he said it seemed like the clubs chose themselves.

Not having the fastest swing speed I know what a seven iron distance will do with my current clubs. These were going 10 yd further and hitting a flag area quite regularly. Think Ping may be getting a phone call.

Do it Tashyboy, then you've got the summer to use them, you don't want to take delivery at the end of the season😃

Not always but how far you hit it but what your dispersion is like, not only left and right but also short/long of target and sometimes you can't do that without the aid of technology. Personally I'd go to Ping, if only for the experience and let their fitters use all their expertise and knowledge to guide you on what works best

Rung them today to make a booking for weds and there shut, bank Holiday. Gutted 😟

Not a Ping user but picked up an i 7 iron with Modus 105 shaft at the range and it was stupid easy to hit and went very far indeed.

What you have just said has has confirmed what I thought earlier today and rattled me some what. I was looking on the Ping website earlier today and it showed differant shafts, lightness to heavy and high flight to low.
I have always been a low flight ball player. Lo and behold with a low swing speed the shafts on my current titleist ( which I was fitted for) show a low flight. How does that help me.
Now when I got back into golf I was gobsmacked how the development of equipment had come on from when I left.
Looking forward to 90 mins at Ping is an understatement.

They will give you excellent advice on shafts. Dispersion is much more important than distance.

Try a 4 iron also. My i25s are easy to hit, I have 3-PW. The 3 and 4 irons are very easy to hit.

Are you trying woods/hybrids also?

To be honest KenL, they will have a field day when I turn up. My main priority is to get irons sorted out, with the right shafts. I tried the G and G max but would like to try the i25s.
after that I would like them to have a look at my G30 driver, I have bought the tour shaft and would like to see the differance between the two.
Re woods/hybrids, that's where the fun starts. I have the Titliest 913 f and FD. Both lifts are the same but one is lofted up and one lofted down. One with a stiff shaft and one with a reg shaft. I bought them coz they were Cosha and cheap. Really cheap. But does cheap equate to right for me.
In essence a lot to cram in in 90 mins.
