Take his tax,insurance and running costs into account and he wont earning far off £15 per hour.
 
We have a really good guy who does most of the DIY that we can't handle any more. Outdoor painting, ceilings roof repairs etc.
He charges £10 an hour but we pay him £15/20...lump sum.
We obviously supply all materials

I don't stop to eat, start at 8 finish at 4.

Not being funny but I could charge more and still get work.

My diary is full until October and turning down 2-3 jobs per month, never been so busy in my life !!

We're about 45 mins south of where Dellboy is, would have no doubt believing its true if hes decent (and no reason to assume he isnt) there are bad trades here charging £200+ a day and booked past the end of the summer

Its also why we're doing more and more of the work on this project ourselves and why Ive been painting the lounge on one leg all week :(

If you're career driven, then a proper degree mixed with some work experience and a couple of years graft in your 20s and you'll be miles ahead of most apprentices or tradesman by the time you're 30, and accelerate even further away in your 30s and 40s.

50k is a pretty decent wage. Earn more than that and you are way above average, approaching rarity.

50k is a good wage. Was on that by time I was 28, I’m 32 now and im pushing 70. Even my mates with degrees are struggling to keep up

Specially with the time off I get 😂

It depends where you live though. In Central London, if the kid we've just taken on as a grad is any good he will earn very close to that in his first year of work. He's 22.

I couldn't survive on anywhere near £50k without major changes in my life.

I always admired Bob, he always got the very best deal for his members. I think he knew they had a limited skill set and they will all be replaced by automation within 20 years so he made sure they wrung every penny out of the taxpayer.

To be fair driverless trains are many years away even now, even still if they did come in it’s law for a member of staff to be on board so whilst they will be paid less no doubt they will still need to be on board and still can be called out by bobs replacement

I met bob a few times over the years and he was a very nice bloke. Took no stick off anyone and did what was best for his members. Very strong leader for sure. If only our country had a leader like him lol

He was a model union leader, my bruv is a shop steward for the GMB in a London hospital, always sings his praise.
Your point about driverless trains is valid, they are years away... but they are coming. The DLR is a great example of a modern transport system, never any problem’s with staff, reliable and very few accidents in 30 years. The only person on board the “Train Captain” has a very minor role, I think he’s only there to reassure the public.

You would be surprised what a train captain has to do over there.. and if they are called out on strike the DLR can’t run

Also missing the main issue the DLR is a “light” railway. Like a monorail almost. Not a deep level railway , our drivers on my line don’t drive anymore but their responsible for fault finding and we couldn’t move trains in failures without them. You would be surprised how often we need them to drive in restricted manual
 
So..I've been successfully self employed as a decorator since the 80's.If you have a guy doing jobs for 100£ a day he's almost certainly not legit..did he do a good job? Quite possibly but he's not legit.Never mind tax and running his van, insurance,liabilities and phone etc etc blah blah blah he's lucky to make 7£ ph if he's contributing to society like the rest of us and paying his way.Likely he's useful and pocketing the entire readies with a nod and a wink.If you consider it DIY then good luck,a professional service costs just like any other profession...and we pay our tax😎
