Mentioned a while back that my 17 year old daughter was looking to buy her first car. (can't find thread to add to:() She was looking at a VW Polo, but couldn't find one she liked. Started to look at an alternative, and we found at a local garage, a three year old Seat Ibiza 1.4 sport in bright yellow. Lovely looking car inside and out, and despite being a sport model was only insurance group 3 compared to group 4 for the Polo. Managed to get a comprehensive insurance quote of £1300 which is a lot cheaper than the VW. Car tax is less as well. The car has just been serviced and had the cam belt done. Has a 5 star safety rating.

My daughter is a qualified swimming teacher, and has saved up the money to buy the car herself. Now she just needs to pass her test at the end of this month.:)

Rich, you not thought about putting her on your insurance to help her out a touch?

Probably half that quote in no time at all.

Feel free to tell me to mind my own...

Ibiza is a great wee car, VW in a different skirt.

I am pleased with her choice, and must admit it is is a bit of a looker compared to the Polo !! Not sure I would get away with taking it up the golf club, it is very yellow !!:)

Works out having the car in Sophie's name and with her as the first named driver is the cheapest insurance option.

Richart, can I ask is that with your daughter insured as a learner?

Will the cost go up once she has passed her test as she will not require a qualified driver in the car with her?

No that is the premium once she has passed her test. As a learner the premium is about £600. Think we must live in a low risk area. It is an additional policy to my one with Admiral, and it does seem a good deal.:)

Oi!!!!

:):)

Good choice Rich, I think Seats are cracking cars, but I'm biased. I also love the colour but they're not very easy to sell when the time comes.

Does it have a name yet? ;)

I love my old man car, but miss my Seat everyday. Cracking cars. Pleased for you and your young in Rich.

This happens more generally with Lads than Lasses. Let loose on their own, a late teenage bloke is so likely to have a crunch in the first 6 months I'm almost surprised the Companies insure them at all...

Usually all insurance will go up once they pass as you say stats show more likely to have an accident within the first year. Young people including me will moan about the price of car insurance but 95% of companies will lose money on the u20s despite them paying massive amounts. Always best soon as its realistically possible to get them on there own insurance to starts getting the NCB as kids on parents policies a lot of companies wont accept this as bonus so will set them off at 0 and its just as expensive as it was in the start of it all.
