Dash cams

Just watched that crash Britton. Wow I knew there are some idiots on the road but that just took it to a whole new level. Will be looking at getting one of these. If only I had one 3 weeks ago when a van hit me then I hit the car infront of me which had slammed on because some stupid cyclist pulled out infront of her.

Wouldnt help you much there, as the ins co will say you were too close to the car in front

If he was stationary when the car behind shunted him into the van, then he wasn't too close. A dash cam would have proven that conclusively.

When it happened to me, I was fortunate enough to have two reliable witnesses (RAF personnel) who stated I was stationary at the time. As a result it was the guy who ran into me that was held to be at fault.

Doesn't matter whether you're stationary or not.

It does coz my insurance company said if stopped b4 i hit the car in front then i am not to blame for anything as the tesult of the van hitting me made me go into the car in front.

Are these becoming standard equipment or factory fitted options in new cars nowadays? If not I dont think it will be long before they do.

If you say that out loud, you will realise how crazy that sounds.

How would an insurance company stop him from claiming if he was stationary and pushed into the car in front?

Because they would say he was too close to the car in front. What ultimately happens though is that all the claims end up being borne by the original shunter, but it's still a buggerance

You're only too close to the car in front if you fail to stop and hit it. If you stop, no matter how close, and are then pushed you are in no way at fault. If you had a dash cam this would be proven and you would avoid any liability.

nonsense!

A stationary car (lets say he's parked) and gets shunted from behind into a car in front, and you think an insurance company would say he was too close:rofl:

We had a gang around here who were deliberately staging rear-end shunts by disconnecting their brake lights and then stopping quickly on a large roundabout.

I have a MiWitness setup which come with front and rear cameras. Stops and starts automatically so I have forgotten about it until I need to check stuff.

Stuff like when my car's dealership (who charges £135/hr) said they'd given the car a four-wheel alignment when the video record show the car sat on the ramp for an hour- but there was an excellent shot of the technician having his coffee and reading the paper. I strung them along by asking for the readout when the sent, what was supposed to be the printout I showed the Manager the video - he went a rather bright shade of pink!

It also recorded a Parking warden giving it a very close inspection - despite everything being legal.

So there's more uses than just accident data.

Friend of mine was featured on that last night, the one where the plonker in the blue car just stops in the outside line of the A3 coming down into Guildford. Jon's white van just got pole-axed from behind by an 18-wheeler. The clown in front then tried to claim someone else had stopped in front of him - the camera footage nailed him.

I had a minor ding last year in a supermarket car park. queuing traffic leaving the car park, i was stationary and a woman pulled out not looking, i could see she was going to hit me and beeped my horn so she knew i was in front of her and she went into my door, very low impact crash but it was clear it was her fault. I didn't stop anyone to get witnesses and didn't have any pics of the road conditions and all that jazz.... anyway.... her insurance company wouldn't pay up saying it was all my fault, so i took her to court and she was claiming all sorts of stuff about how i was aggressive and was going to fast and not paying attention etc.

In the end, turns out she had falsified evidence and I was awarded all the monies and the judge gave her a rollicking.

After that I decided to buy a dash cam. If i'd have had one then everything would have been much simpler. Mine is a chinese jobby, cost about £30 but likely to go at any moment, once it does I'll probably get something better.

I have caught some poor driving and road rage drivers which is fun, but the day i was behind a 3 car pileup i'd moved the SD card into another camera so didn't film it.... #fail

almost had one today, driving along main road, guy reversing out his drive in a merc, sees me and stops, then proceeds to come out scaring everyone in the car and missing me by a breath, if I had swerved to other side I would have hit a bus! Dash cam would have been simple in that situation as he would prob have claimed I was too fast or flashed him out or something.

anyway, quick stop and a few words with him and moved on.

Dash cams in google now
