With the recent air crash in Taiwan and the amazing images of the 2013 meteor over Russia as well as hours of youtube road traffic collisions and near misses just wondering what people think about dash cams?

Anyone using one or plan to get one?

What are you using/getting?

What do you think about them?

a lot of young drivers HAVE to get one to comply with their insurance, more and more people get them to use if a claim is made against them or to use as evidence in a crash etc, plus they availability of the gocam type used by motor bike riders and action sport junkies, you even see them at the range to record swing techniques.

I've had one for just over a year now. Its a Roadhawk HD, which is, or was one of the better ones, used by a lot of professional drivers.

Like many people, I got it after I had a no fault accident, where the other driver initially admitted liability and then denied it (his insurers folded the day before the court case, fortunately). I feel a lot happier now knowing that I have a video record in case of any future such problems.

they are a great idea, I want one but they all seem to have one or two negative things about them- I'm sure they'll be a good all round one along soon

I knew a lad that was in a crash and had black box style recorded in his car, in court the driver of the other car was claiming whiplash and all sorts of other issues as he stated the crash happened to fast. The solicitor of the lad with the black box then provided evidence from the box that the crash had happened at less than 5mph and there was no way the other driver could have sustained the injuries he was claiming.

Saw a video of a Helmet cam on a bike rider , he recorded his own final moments , very sad and it was by his mum on a bike awareness thing , he was cut up by a car turning into his path , but he was doing 95 MPH

Actually you can, soft tissue damage can happen at any speed. I know because I, my wife and eldest daughter at the time (aged 5 yrs) all suffered soft tissue as a result of being the last car of a 4 car shunt.

Cripes. How did we ever drive around without one?? Something, creepy, voyeuristic or just plain snoopy about having one in my eyes. As for insurance purposes, call the old bill and get em on scene. Also mobile phone pics for insurance purposes should suffice.

Its comments like that that make people claim. They may cause a bit of soreness but not genuine whiplash. Its the same as running into a closed gate on foot.

It's general ignorance like this passed off as fact (when completely incorrect) that shows I was correct to draw folks attention to it in the first place. #everydayisaschoolday

Good luck with that!!!

Pictures of the aftermath of a shunt do not necessarily indicate who was at fault.

This. Unless there is fairly significant injury the police will not be interested. Most of the time even if they do turn up the reports they produce provide little evidential value in regard to liability, they will also not prove/disprove an injury as more often than not soft tissue symptoms develop some time later.

Having worked on both Defendant and Claimant side of such issues I've seen many many chancers, but more genuinely injured people. I feel these cams are a good idea on the whole as they will prevent innocent victims being taken advantage of by people trying to cheat the system so far as liability is concerned. Also, although they will never be conclusive as to causation on injuries, the evidence they can produce will likely scare off a lot of chancers from running a low speed impact case, who will not want to run the risk in Court, with video evidence to potentially discredit them

I was in a crash a good while back, both cars ended up on the pavement, one in the side of the other, police drove past, saw everyone was okay and didn't stop.

Just watched that crash Britton. Wow I knew there are some idiots on the road but that just took it to a whole new level. Will be looking at getting one of these. If only I had one 3 weeks ago when a van hit me then I hit the car infront of me which had slammed on because some stupid cyclist pulled out infront of her.
