I'm off to Dartmoor (Drew Steignton) for a fortnight on Monday. I'll be hoping to play two or three times a week if I can. I've been playing for a month... a long way short of "breaking 100", and prefer to play 9 hole courses. Perfectly happy to play a little par 3. My son (also a complete beginner) would also like to play, and with him it'd definitely be a par 3 course that we'd be looking for.

My friend mentioned Bovey Castle and Moretonhampstead as worthy of consideration.

Thoughts or recommendations invited.

Thanks!

Bovey Castle could be a bit to much for a virtual novice, some of the holes look to be a little on the nasty side, several par4/5's with ponds and streams bordering them, although I thought they had a 9 hole as well but can't seem to find anything on it, probably best to give em a ring...

Can't seem to find anything on Moretonhampstead GC, just comes up as 'Bovey Castle/Manor GC' so who knows...

Nice one 'Hosel' wrangaton might be a bit more suited to your requirements 'Dorne' not to far from 'Newton Scabbit' either, if you haven't guessed by now, I'm from Souff Debb'n...

Bovey castle used to be Moreton Hampstead. They are the same. BC have spent a lot of cash on the golf course. Apparently. In the same way apparently with the hotel. I've not been there for 15 odd years, so can't comment on current state of either.

But.

The layout remains the same.

Awesome front nine. Not many better. Back nine ok until 16. Walk in. 16, 17, 18 are garbage. Just a poor layout. It's sad to walk off with those holes as your memory. The front 9, may be 11, are stunning.

Hotel is over priced, but decent.

20 years ago used to get dinner, bed, breakfast, and golf for 25 a night. Wouldn't get a bar snack for that now!
