Just bought myself a bike to try and get fit. Plan is to cycle to and from work when in London.

Can anyone recommend some good shoes, shorts?

Journey is 7 miles each way, so 14 mile round trip, all roads.

Redwood - do you want baggy shorts, (ala Mountain Biking), or Roadie lycra ?

Personally, if I was going to have to walk into work, it would be baggies all the way, otherwise you'll have the ladeez throwing up perhaps, but having said that, they are more comfortable !

Either way, pay good money, and make sure they have damned good padding in the seat, it makes a huge difference.

Shoes- are you getting SPD clip-in pedals ?

If not, I would - miles more efficient and much less faff than toe-straps etc, in fact if you're gonna be in traffic, SPD's will be a god-send.

:)

I think I better go with baggy shorts!!! ;)

I wasn't after clip on shoes per se, as the bike I have isn't a true road bike, and will probably be used for other things as well as the commute, so don't want to stick specialist pedals on.

I cycle to work in the Spring/Summer and the route is road/track/bridleway.

The equipment I use:

1) Padded baggy shorts - mine have have a removable inner short, useful if I want to wear the shorts casually.
2) Gore windproof top(s) - useful as even on a nice morning you can still feel the chill.
3) Gloves - again, worth spending a bit of money on a good pair for retaining heat/wicking moisture.
4) Headband - goes under helmet and protects your ears from the wind (used to get earache)
5) Recommend a Paclite Gore Tex top in case of showers.
6) I haven't got any specialist shoes, just use a pair of Merrells that have some grip.
7) Invest in some decent (metal) pedals. I had toe clips but hated them.

I just shop at Evans Cycles online - they have everything you could want there....credit card beware :D :D

Hope this helps in some way.

sports direct are doing muddy fox baggy shorts with padding around the delicate region, were about 16 quid if i mind right
