I've been keeping quiet, but I can't contain it anymore. :)

I cut my Wilson Spine down from 46"-44.75" and for the first time since last summer, I'm hitting it out the middle!!!

The improvement in distance is phenomenal .....

there, I've said it.....I'm going to cook. :)

46" is insanely long for a driver in the first place.

I know.

I pulled it out the bag the other day and was SO depressed to see about half a zillion ball marks 1cm towards the heel.
So I taught it a lesson, chopped it's tail off and chucked on a new grip.

You can even persuade it to draw now it's under control.
ASBO drivers.....let's round them up.

Completely agree......Nearly all drivers off the shelf currently are around this length........
Most of the Pro's are using clubs between 44-45"......

Seems the logical thing to do Dave....But would it not mess up the swing weight.....
Iv got a MacGregor MacTec that i dont use......It could be getting the chop soon too :D :D :D

Just out of interest......Where is the shaft measured from.......?

My first driver was a Burner and the shaft was at least 46 inches long. Had no chance of controlling it. Was then fitted for an Orka driver and the club fitter explained the problems that the shaft was causing and made my driver with a 43.5 inch shaft which was great. Since then only had Callaway drivers as they have not gone down the long shaft for more distance route.

Dave - I think you saw my post about re-shafting an old 2Wood WarBird with a steel shaft didnt you ?

I had it set to 1" longer than my 4W, and boy, was it worth it.
Tonight I absolutely nailed a few, highlights of which were the 2W & 6i to our Par4 450yd 10th, and driving the greenside bunker on our Par4 285yd 14th.

As far as I can see, control is everything :-)

Are the shafts tapered to make them bigger at the top, or is it the grip that makes the top bigger?
What I'm getting at is if you cut a shaft off at the top, are you left with a slightly thinner grip?

Also, if I wanted to measure mine, where you you measure to/from?

You really are 'experimenting' with your clubs this year aren't you.

I'm almost looking forward as to what you'll do next in the quest for scientific satisfaction!

:)

I wonder what's next too. Nothing planned as yet... :)

It's all good fun though.

Did you add any weight to the head Dave? I cut 1" from my driver at the start of the year and had to add about 3" of lead tape to the bottom to get the shaft kicking again.
People told me I'd lose distance, but the accuracy is frightening(bordering on boring).Still long enough to win LD at Castle Stuart as well BTW

Funny you should ask. In theory, the swing weight will be messed up and ideally the club would benefit from having weight added to the head, yes. However, the common consensus (from everyday players) seems to be to try it first, and see how you go. In fairness, a stronger player might well struggle, but for me it works OK. I think anyone adding weight is probably doing the right thing, I'm not going to argue.

I'm not surprised you won the LD prize....I've seen photo evidence of your lag!!!

3 inches of lead is a heck of alot.
Is it?
It does the job for me anyway.
The tape is quite narrow.
I just kept adding until I felt the shaft start to work again, I'm quite ignorant in these matters.

No need for any confusion. There are simple maths which one could apply....not for me (admittedly) but for good players, for sure. Lowering the swingweight was not something I was concerned about.

The tapering is marginal on 1".....besides the grip adds the bulgy bit.

I measured mine (ooh er) by sitting the club on the ground and going from ground to end of butt. That was 46", so I guess it's the complete length. It's a good q? and one I've always wanted to hear answered by an expert.

PS
I can test the total diameter of the grip if you like, because with the old grip my 3rd finger was 1mm from touching my fleshy thumb base. If it's still 1mm, we'll know the answer.

Am I right in thinking that a tall fella would need a long driver and a wee man would be better off with a shorter one?

Or is it totally irrelevant?

It's all to do with distance between wrist to floor. (I think)
So if you're a tall fella with orangutan arms, you'll need a shorter club than a short bloke with T-rex arms.

Quite intrigued by this shortening of the driver Dave. But I was thinking, with my limited knowledge :D that just gripping down on the club would have the same effect?

I tend to hit off the heel and somebody gave me a tip to address the ball with the toe of the club, which has made quite a difference to my driving - most of the time :o

Golfmmad.

what did the wife say when you cut a couple of inches off....the driver :D

Now I've done the research I should have done before asking the question, I might be able to help :o

The Titleist website quotes my driver at being 45", so the next time I have my driver and a tape measure to hand I'll see where 45" from the top of the grip comes to .

At 45", I guess it would be easier to just grip down an inch or so that have my club 'seen to'.

Damn! I was hoping it would be about 52" and I could blame my poor driving on that :D
